Honours for 7News
posted (November 16, 2010)
And before we go to break - we are proud to announce that for the second year in a row, Channel 7 News Director Jules Vasquez and special correspondent Janelle Chanona have snagged a pair of regional media awards for stories that aired on this newscast.

It's called the 2010 Caribbean Population Awards - which recognize stories which examine population related issues including migration, urbanization, gender, and Health.

Jules won for his feature titled, "Chiquibul the Silent Invasion" - a four part series which took viewers into the heart of the Chiquibul forest Reserve - an area under constant pressure from Guatemalan poachers, who are logging, hunting and farming in open defiance of Belizean law and authority.

Janelle won for her story, Children With Cancer, The Belizean Reality - which took a compelling - often devastating - look into the ordeal of two children living with cancer - and examined their personal struggles as well as those of their families.

They will receive their awards on November 30th. at an award ceremony to be held this year in Trinidad and Tobago. We will be repeating their award winning stories coming unto that date.

We note that this year 7news has claimed two of the four television awards given throughout the region while last year 7news claimed three of the five television awards - our dearly departed colleague Keith Swift leading the way in that one with the Platinum Award.

A Belizean NGO has also bested its regional counterparts and won in the non-media category; Last year the Belize YWCA won that award and this year The National Women's Commission nabbed this prize.

This award recognizes a group for outstanding work in development that improves the health and welfare of individuals. Executive Director of National Women's Commission, Ann-Marie Williams told us how the commission's women in politics programme did just that:

Ann-Marie Williams, Executive Director of National Women's Commission
"The commission won the award from among 7 other entries in the wider English speaking Caribbean and we're delighted."

Andrea Polanco
"So what does this accomplishment mean for the Women's Commission?"

Ann-Marie Williams, Executive Director of National Women's Commission
"Well it means for starters, that the investment that the commission made in its first year is certainly paying off and it has paid off, the Women in Politics project. We put out a public call to women who are interested in running for politics, those who want to stand for elections and we get them together and offer them training for 12 weeks and prepare them so to speak to enter. So I put that project together and decided that this is a project that is certainly affecting change and affecting the lives and circumstances of women, their families and by extension he wider Belizean community and the country so when I heard that we won, yes I was surprise but I can see because the project has certainly had an impact here let alone in years to come."
