Gales Point No Water For Christmas?
posted (December 20, 2010)
Gales point residents could be without running water this Christmas. That's because over the weekend thieves ruthlessly looted the village's water system station which is 5 miles from the village.

Today the chairman of the water board told us more:…

Kevin Andrewin, Chairman Gales Point Water Board
"We don't have any water at all in the community. The damage that they did was that they took out all the electrical parts and they took out half of the generator and only leave a little part there. They make an attempt to take out the pump also. That person or persons looks like they know exactly what they are doing, it looks like they are familiar with the installment of these equipment especially the electrical parts. Right now the community is out of water. We don't have a water system at this time. What we are doing is calling on the Prime Minister and the area representative Hon. Michael Hutchison to see if we can maybe work with the Belize water service to get the old pump fix. If we get the old pump fix then we could operate the old water system until the police department do an investigation to what happen. We have children of 4-5 years old who have to go like 5 miles with bucket out of the village on bicycle to get water from the creek, we don't know if this water is really safe. From hurricane this is the worst disaster because at least people live from hurricane but they cannot live without water. This is the most deadly disaster that has hit Gales point. The person that do things like that I know they must have children and a heart please to have 500 people out of water , that is really serious, I don't think God will forgive you unless you try to return stuff like that back."

According to Andrewin, the old system needs some bushings to be operational - and he called on his area representative Michael Hutchinson for assistance….

Security Guard Drunk With Weapon

Thirty three year old Guatemalan National Cesar Pop, a security guard for Triple A Security who allegedly fired a shot at the feet of another security guard, was charged with aggravated assault when he appeared today in Magistrate's Court.

Pop pleaded not guilty to the charge. Magistrate Albert Hoare explained to him that the court cannot offer him bail because of the nature of the offence. He remanded Pop into custody until January 21, 2011.

The incident occurred around 6:00 on Saturday, December 18. The complainant, a 33 year old Nigerian security guard Jirnikandee Anyiwo, reported to the police that he was at the corner of Victoria Street and North Front Street when Pop arrived to relieve him.

Anyiwo said when he asked Pop why he was late Pop pointed a point 22 revolver at his feet and fired a single shot into the ground in front of him. Anyiwo said he ran into the bathroom and called the police.

The police said when they arrived they took away a point 22 revolver from Pop which had 5 live rounds and one expended shell. The police reported that Pop admitted he fired the shot but claimed that it was because he was drunk.

A Special Lunar Eclipse

If you have a clear view of the sky - you'll be able to see a spectacular sight tonight above Belize - a full lunar eclipse. The only thing is - you'll have to stay up until really late - the eclipse starts at about 11:30 pm and will reach its total phase around 1:30 am Belize time.

This is time lapse video of the last total lunar eclipse over Belize back in February of 2008.

Tonight - as it did then - for more than an hour, the moon should glow sunset-red, due to the light refracted by the edge of Earth's atmosphere.

According to stargazers, this eclipse is special because it happens just hours before the December solstice, which is on Dec. 21.

The last time that happened was almost 400 years ago! And The next such winter solstice eclipse isn't due for another 84 years!

Enjoy - but if you can't stay up - we'll have video of it tomorrow….
