Fawda fired
posted (December 31, 2010)
Three weeks ago on December fifth, City Council Employee Phillip Fawda Henry gave 7news an interview at the UDP Caribbean Shores Convention. He called out the council for not doing its job in keeping the city clean. A fair and free comment except that he's a council employee and Henry was brought before a disciplinary action committee to answer for his harsh public assessment.

He cited the constitution of Belize which guarantees freedom of speech to all citizens. Well, they didn't buy it, and today - On New Year's Eve - he was given his letter of dismissal.

It was a firing foretold and before he got the letter, he came to our studio in uniform for a biting and dramatic farewell. Here's how that went:…

Jules Vasquez Reporting
Today Phillip "Fawda" Henry got on his City Council issued motorcycle for the last time and of course he did it with his customary dramatic flair.

Phillip "Fawda" Henry
"I will turn in the motorcycle before they ask for it Jules. I will turn in the cycle because I receive this cycle form Mrs. Zenaida Moya and I will turn it into her at this moment, I will go directly to the Belize City Council and turn in this cycle and let her know that "Fawda" declare war on the council, on everyone at this time so I will say to Mrs. Zenaida Moya stay away from the rest of their people because my troops bare moving and who so ever are in the way the missile is going to catch. I am going to let everything out, everything single thing out."

And he started today by hitting us with an avalanche of documents all about financial controller Patrick Tillett, alleging that he have proof of Tillet's irresponsibility, making the claim that City Council is a loan shark.

Phillip "Fawda" Henry
"City Council is a loan shark place; it's not City Council anymore. He lends these money and he makes signatures and you pay back interest on these monies."

That sounds fair standard to us and because we could not reach Tillet for a response and are not on the face of it convince that there were any improprieties, we can't go into the allegations at this time. But nonetheless "Fawda" Henry is determine to oust Tillet.

Phillip "Fawda" Henry
"I am asking you as the Prime Minister of this country to remove Mr. Tillett forthwith and I have petition here to show 200 strong Belizean citizen who believe in the wrong doing of Mr. Tillet what he is doing. Yes our Prime Minister place the auditor there to see that things go right but when you come in there Jules you come in there and you join the devil, so Jules its best for them to terminate me and get me out of there because the devil is on there Jules, the devil is in there and I am going to tell you we need so much priests to go in there and pray to heal that building."

And while he testified, "Fawda" Henry also gathered a petition with 200 signatures from people who feel he should not lose his job base on a television interview.

Phillip "Fawda" Henry
"That's the reason I went into the streets and I got overwhelming 200 signatures petition and people are not happy, they support what I have said and they are waiting to see if the Belize City Council are going to terminate me and these are signatures from attorneys, from people who are doctors, from nurses, from teachers..."

And while he has ground support, he did not have support from the disciplinary tribunal who voted for him to be fired.

Phillip "Fawda" Henry
"So the person that signs the letter, the ship will go for them, I declare war on them."

Jules Vasquez
"But at the same time I understand a number of people have to vote on your termination."

Phillip "Fawda" Henry
"Jules you are talking about the Kangaroos. You are talking about the Kangaroo court; we go back to the same Kangaroo court Jules. That is ridiculous; I am not going to support Kangaroos for my termination."

But it's final and irrevocable and "Fawda" has to move on but he says he won't move far.

Phillip "Fawda" Henry
"I am laughing Jules because New Years is around the bend and I will eat my nice black cake and my nice white cake and what they will be eating? they will be waiting for 2012 to go home. I may be gone from there but I will not be too far around the corner Jules, I already told you Jules, my troops are around the council and my troops have heavy artilleries. There are more yet to burst out but I am going to leave it for the later interview."

Henry was given his letter of dismissal shortly after our interview, and says he was given a bottle of Black Label with it. The letter was signed by the HR Manager Charlene Rudon - but he says the directive came from upstairs.
