Terrible Traffic Accident Claims One Life
posted (April 4, 2011)
There was a terrible traffic fatality on the Western Highway yesterday. The scar in the pavement shows where the vehicle skidded across the road on its rim after experiencing a blowout.

It happened between mile 9 and 10 on the western highway when a Ford Explorer experienced a blowout and was flung violently off the highway into the canal used by Bakabush tours.

On Sunday afternoon around 1:30, 32 year old Iony Westby - a resident of Placencia Village was driving from Belize City towards Hattieville when the blowout caused her to lose control and overturned several times.

The vehicle - with 6 people inside - careened into a tree beside the canal and then lurched into the canal - landing about 150 feet away from where the blowout occurred.

Westby died on the spot as she was crushed behind the wheel when the top was smashed in. She received severe injuries to her hands and foot. Traveling in the vehicle at the time was Ariel Westby - a student of Placencia Village and 4 other minors. They all received head and body injuries and were transported to the KHMH for treatment.
