Police Had It Wrong: It Was Not A Landmine
posted (April 18, 2011)
On Friday night we told you that police reported that they had found a landmine in a series of searches on Flamboyant street. A landmine!? Really? A very scary prospect, but, apparently, the police had it wrong, and because of that so did we.

They found the wire and a device called a clacker for a Claymore anti-personnell land mine, but they didn't find the min. That's like the difference between finding a car battery and finding a car! BDF Bomb expert Lieutenant Cornel David Jones explained what they found and where it came from:…

Lieutenant Cornel David Jones, BDF Bomb Expert
"When I heard the report on the news i was shock because I know there were no mines and there were no detonator, because the two important component of the M18A1 is the actual mine itself and the detonator that can set off the mine. None of those were recovered, so there is no danger or threat to the public."

Jules Vasquez
"But how would someone get their hands on even highly specialize ancillary equipment for a mine?"

Lieutenant Cornel David Jones, BDF Bomb Expert
"When these mines are used in training like in the area of Baldy Beacon or the Mountain Pine Ridge area, our soldiers would normally collect the wires - it's like souvenirs that they did use a mine. These wires would come in from the soldiers and they normally used the wires like for speaker wires or even to do wiring in their vehicles. It's a common piece of wire that you can buy at the shops or get at any store and used. It's nothing special about it. The only thing is that it is color brown, so you know it's a military type wire. But it's not any danger to anyone."

Jules Vasquez
"So now these mines are used in training in Belize."

Lieutenant Cornel David Jones, BDF Bomb Expert
"Yes these mines have been used in Belize. At the moment we do not have any of these mines, so we don't have any of these mines in the BDF, so we don't have them."

So, again - NO LAND MINE WAS FOUND - only the wire and something called a clacker for a landmine, which can't hurt anyone.
