posted (April 18, 2011)
And while those youths were playing basketball on one side of Sugar City, over on the other side, Love FM was holding its sixth annual Band Fest.

With over twelve competing bands, more than twelve hundred participants and spectators from across the country- it is the biggest - most competitive youth recreation events of the year.

Today 7news spoke with Organizer Julia Carrillo - who told us who this year's winners were.

Julia Carrillo, Organizer
"In Orange Walk we had 13 bands competing for Bandfest champions. In Bandfest we have two categories; we have the drum corps category and we have the marching band with instrument. We had 8 bands taking part for the Drum Corp category and we had 5 bands participating for the marching band with instrument. Of the 5; one was from Corozal and the other 4 was from the west. In this 5 we had the Succotz Festival Drum Corp who have been with us from the beginning and have won 3 of the Bandfest in the previous years. As a matter of fact they are they are the holders of the original sceptre that we had. We have something that if you win Bandfest 3 years back-to-back you get to keep the sceptre. So we had to make a new one that was won by Corozal Community College last year. Succotz Festival came in 2nd place. This year we had the winners who were Succotz Festival Drum Corp - the came out and they really awed the public, the Corozal Community College took 2nd Place and coming in 3rd was Mount Carmel who had been absent for a long time for about a year or so. They came back this year and they won 3rd place."

"In the drum line category, we had coming first was Holy Redeemer. This is the 3rd year that they have won the Drum Corp category. They want to move into the Marching Band with instrument next year; Coming in 2nd was a group who this is their second year taking part in Bandfest - we are talking about the Sarteneja United Drum Corp and coming in 3rd was Uprising Drum Corp from Orange Walk. So those were the winners. A part from that we had a special category for most improve band, that went to Western Chunan - they have deserve it because they have been in existence for about 3 years now and over the years we have seen them develop into where they are now which is much better than where they started off. Then we also have the drum line category; that was won by St. Luke Methodist, the Best Uniform Marching band was won by Succotz Festival Drum Corp and Most Popular Marching Band was won by Corozal Community College."

Winners of the main category received trophies and medals apart from a 6 thousand dollar cash prize and a four thousand dollars cash.
