Alert Special Constable Calls Burglars While They Are In The Act
posted (April 29, 2011)
Police are reporting a colourful arrest in Spanish Lookout which turned up two stolen weapons. It happened before one this morning when Norman Dueck, Manager of Universal Hardware, Spanish Lookout was awakened by the sound of the alarm for his store. He contacted a Special Constable and they both went to the hardware where they saw people inside the store. They called Cpl Norman Coye the Spanish lookout Police. Cpl. Coye responded and all three of them approached the door that the thieves got in through when someone fired a shot at them, and they returned fire.

And this is where the story gets a little crazy. One of the Special constables put two and two together and concluded that the burglars were the same ones who had burglarized Koop's Sheet Metal over the Easter Weekend. He somehow knew their phone number and called them. And they answered! That's right - they told him they were inside the building alight but one of them had been shot and they wanted to surrender.

So, at about 2:40 a.m. after the arrival of the Quick Response Team, from the San Ignacio Town Police Station and the three burglars surrendered. They are 31 year old Jason August, 20 year old Fidel Estrada, and 21 year old Jesus Estrada, all of Esperanza Village. Jason August had been shot to the right forearm.

Inside the building police found a .38 special revolver along with 9 live rounds, as well as one 16-gauge sawed-off shotgun along with a cartridge. Police also found a knap sack with over a hundred dollars in coins. Checks showed that the .38 Special revolver had been reported stolen in a burglary a month earlier at Running W Meats. The 16-gauge sawed-off was also stolen - that one as far back as 5th September, 2008 during a burglary in Teakettle Village and is property of Ramon Medina.

August, and the two Estradas are presently in police custody pending charges of Attempt Murder, Burglary and Handling stolen goods, Kept firearm and ammunition without a gun license.

In another weapon seizure, Police searched at an abandoned house in Camalote Village where they found a 16-gauge homemade sawed-off shotgun in the ceiling of the said house.

And now to the story of the police operation this morning in Belize City. It was staged between 4:00am and 10:00am, with the Special Branch, CIB, CIU, ADU, Patrol Branch, Traffic, Violent Criminal Apprehension Program and the Belize Defense Force targeting what police call known crime-ridden areas of Cairo Street, Glynn Street, King Street, Euphrates Avenue, Far West Street and Complex Street and Police Street.

Two persons were detained for Contraband Liquor, specifically (16) bottles of assorted contraband liquor including Alize, Hypnotic and Bailey's Irish Cream.

The liquor was taken into Customs Custody until proof of duty payment could be provided - which must be done in four days.

Police also arrested and charged Allan Felix, 33yrs, deliveryman and Ann Bradley, 29yrs, both of #37 King Street for Possession of Controlled Drugs and Possession of Communication Apparatus without a license - which is presumably this Motorola Handheld Radio. You may recall that Ann Bradley was on the new son Tuesday night as one of the Avondale Trumbach funeral goers who claimed police harassment.

During the operation police also found over two pounds of cannabis at Faber's Road Extension area but no one was in the immediate area.

And in our last bit of police news, Ex BDF Soldier GLENSFORD BERMUDEZ - who was found guilty of killing his wife - was sentenced to six months imprisonment today in court for tampering with a juror.
