Convicted Killer Freed By Appeals Court
posted (June 7, 2011)
Another man convicted of killing another got off today - but in the Court of Appeals.

Thirty five year old Ted Armstrong, who was convicted of manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 years, was acquitted today by Belize Court of Appeal.

Armstrong had appealed mainly on the ground that the judge misdirected the jury when he told them that even if they are in doubt as to whether Armstrong acted in self-defense they could still convict him.

The Belize Court of Appeal upheld the appeal, quashed Armstrong's conviction, set aside his sentence and acquitted him.

Armstrong was convicted of manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of Jerome "Jazzi" Longsworth which occurred on July 14, 2006 in Hattieville. Armstrong was convicted on October 20, 2010.

Longsworth was stabbed in his neck with a pair of scissors after he intervened in an altercation between Armstrong and his sister. Armstrong was represented by attorney Darrell Bradley. The Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl Lyn Vidal represented the respondent.
