posted (June 24, 2011)
Last night we told you about a group of senior Belizean track athletes headed to Costa Rica to take part in the 22nd Annual Central American Athletic games.

Well, those games got underway today, and already, according to news reports out of Costa Rica, Belize is making headlines! This morning Kaina Martinez who joined the Belize delegation from Jamaica, broke her own 2009 100 meter record of 11:98, with a new time of 11:74. Martinez is the current 100/200 meters champion. And, she was not the only one breaking records today.

The first day of championship games produced a total of four new records, two of them set by Costa Rica, one by Guatemala and one by Belize.

The Guatemalan Jenner Manrique Pelico Gonzalez set a new Central American record for the 800 meters with a time of 1:51:46 in Costa Rica's San Jose National stadium, beating the 20 year old record held by another Guatemalan, Luis Martinez, by 6 hundredths of a second!

We will continue to provide you with updates on the performance of our athletes, as the results come in.
