Hon. Marcel Stoned At In House
posted (July 4, 2011)
As you saw earlier, the Opposition walked out of today's house meeting - leaving the government to have free reign over the assembly.

And they would have, were it not for that non-affiliated voice, former UDP representative for Orange Walk East Marcel Cardona.

He's been banished to the back of the opposition back bench - but he is independent and gave a lengthy address on the BTL renationalization bill - lamenting his difficulties with it. But in the end he made it clear that while he could not support it he also could not vote in favor of it. And that caused quite a site in the gallery which was running over with UDP supporters. Here's how that went.

Hon. Marcel Cardona - Orange Walk East Representative
"I cannot support the current bill because... (applause) I cannot this current bill, but neither shall I vote against it. And in reply... (Jeers)

Speaker of the House
"Honorable members, Members of the Gallery, I will ask you to withdraw."

Hon. Marcel Cardona
"Mr. Speaker, before I sit down, I wish to state for the record, Mr. Prime Minister. And this is directly to the PM. PM, listen, for the record, if - the people of Orange Walk East - if you want out, call elections now! Call Elections now, you have the power! Call it now! And let's..."

Speakers of House
"Members of the Gallery..."

We note that Cardona appeared to have been stoned or at least stoned at by a UDP supporter - who was kicked out of the meeting after that and been banned from coming to the next two house meetings.

We note, with dismay, that the press officer staffer controlling the sound board also appears to have killed Cardona's microphone at the very end.
