posted (July 14, 2011)
Documentary Film-makers Khalil and Eli Fantauzzi from Caifornia have become fictures in Belize during the summer time. They host annual video production summer camps - and this year they are here to do the same. But they're also making a documentary on hip hop in Colombia and Khalil stopped by our studio today tell us about the whole shibang:…

Khalil Fantauzzi
"I just got down shooting a documentary in Colombia, in South America and we are currently there. My young brother Eli is currently there right now, we found out about what hip hop is - how young people creating alternatives to some of the violence that's been happening in their neighborhoods and so young people utilizing break dancing, DJ'ing, grafitte art and mc'ing to kind of get people from considering going down the violent path of joining gangs and stuff they are doing positive things with their life."

"What was the experience like for you in Colombia?"

Khalil Fantauzzi
"Well it's my first time in South America. I am actually of Puerto Rican ancestry and so "yo habla espanol perfectamente" but in terms of seeing a community of young people who don't speak identify so strongly something that comes from the US - obviously it comes from young black and brown communities - hip hop in general. But to see young people out there really believing in hip hop and really seeing it as a way of transferring lives was a very amazing experience. 4 weeks ago was our first time of going down there and so we are just kind of meeting the characters and you always do research about what's going on in a country and then you go and find out for yourself. So we are right now learning about what's really happening and getting to know the key players in the movement."

"So when can Belizeans or viewers see a peek of the documentary?"

Khalil Fantauzzi
"Well actually this Saturday as a part of the international Belizean film festival - we are going to be showing the last film that we did which is about hip hop in Ghana its call "Home Grown - Hip Life in Ghana" it's about traditional hip hop and so we are going ti be showing that for free on Saturday. The third world field on Vernon Street from 5pm to 9pm and so we are going to show the full length "Home Grown" documentary but I am also going to be showing a sneak preview of some of the work and photos that we have been doing in Colombia. I am also here teaching workshops to young people to learn how to be able to take amazing photographs and also do videos and create their own documentaries. So on Monday our classes start. its open roman still, it's a part of global parish and we are really trying to get young people to try to have an opportunity to express what's going on in their own lives here in Belize City."

The three week workshop starts on Monday at 10am at the Mexican Institute. If you would like more information on the 3 week course you can call telephone number 677-5571.
