Woman Pleas For Bail For Paralyzed Son
posted (September 19, 2011)
24 year old Dean Davis was one of two prison inmates who were seriously injured on May 27th - when the vehicle that was transporting them from Orange Walk Magistrate court to Belize Central Prison overturned.

Davis suffered injuries to his spinal cord which left him paralyzed. Davis is serving time for the murder of Erin Sutherland that occurred on April 18 2010.

But today his mother Antonia Zuniga told us she has been trying to get bail for her son because of his condition- but has only been getting the run around. She told us her son is in desperate need of medical attention and the prison is not equipped to deal with a situation such as Davis's.

Antonia Zuniga, Mother
"I came her so I can report these negative things that is happening, it's not right, I came to report it because it's not the first time I report it, because what happened in that prison - many people don't know what happened in that prison. They have my son there for so long and he is there for a year and change and I have never gone through a problem like this going up and down before. But because of his situation and the condition he is in right now it hurts me a lot because it's not fair that they have him like that. First off all, the nurse said she is taking care of my son, but she is not taking care of my son. Nobody can take care of my son than me his mother, than how a mother can take care of her son."

"Now tell me he was involved in an accident?"

Antonia Zuniga, Mother
"A terrible accident he was involves in, without a seat belt, no kind of protection and he was hand cuff, he was involved in that accident."

Monica Bodden
"So he was on a prison bus?"

Antonia Zuniga, Mother
"Yes on a prison bus."

Monica Bodden
"On a prison van?"

Antonia Zuniga, Mother
"Many of the boys got hurt. The policeman died. A police was driving and I didn't hear anything about him or his name and my son. Whenever you are broken or any parts of you have bones broken you will always feel the weather where it's broken and you will not feel too well as a human being. It's not fair, it's unfair what they do, they can send my son to me so I can try my very best with my son by the grace of God. If he have another case to do he will still have case, whenever he gets better and get back on his feet."

Monica Bodden
"Right now he's paralyzed?"

Antonia Zuniga, Mother
"He's paralyzed and they him to put him in a chair, which is wrong for months, they said before three months they would see what they can do to us. Calling a closer date for the case or to send my son home so that I can take care of him and I can always come along with him for the case and they did not do it. I don't know what they mean to do my sons life and with my life, I need for them to write a note to a doctor so that he can see a doctor before he is left. because he needs a checkup from head to to. I went to the higher men to see if we can try take him to a doctor at the Karl Huesner Hospital, but all of them are just pushing me and pushing around, for what reason? My little boy was a strong whole little boy and he use to go and do work at the farm, he go to fishing."

The bail application is currently before the Supreme Court - a ruling is expected at the end of this month. Davis's mom told us, she is planning on suing the prison.
