World Food Day: The Food Prices Crisis
posted (October 14, 2011)
Today is world fodd day and the ministry of agriculture had an open day at Central Farm. It was a big event, but it rained throughout which threw more than a damper on the festivities.

Still, they managed to get across the main point: FOOD Prices, from Crisis to stability:

Hon. Rene Montero - Minister of Agriculture
"Some of us do not eat foods that are less nutritious because it is more affordable, but a large segment of the population eats these foods due to their eating habits, and lack of knowledge on the negative effects of eating unhealthy and unsafe foods on our bodies. Belize is one of the countries with the highest rate of non-communicable diseases in the region. A high percentage of our population suffers from obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes."

Dr. Miguel Figueroa - Delivering Message from Dr. Mike Deshield
"The theme for this year's World Food Day is "Food prices: From Crisis to Stability". It is one thing to bring down the price of food, but lower costs should not be at the expense of the quality and safety of the food. We need to focus on quality, nutritious, local foods, rather than the vast array of processed imports that provide empty calories. Local foods not only provide good nutrition for our bodies, but help ensure food security for our nation, which will help to reach the goal of price stability."

Dr. Michael Deshield was not there because he is battling illness. He is the Director of Food Safety for BAHA and received a special award today.
