A hot political story in Guatemala has connections to Belize. It's a massive corruption probe which has implicated Gloria Torres, the sister in law of Guatemala's President - who is also the sister of well-known PUP Executive member, Narda Garcia and the Aunt of Greg Papas Garcia, the PUP standard Bearer for Corozal Bay.
According to international news reports, Gloria Torres faces an international arrest warrant and is a fugitive, facing embezzlement charges, as well as allegations that she laundered money in Panama.
On Monday, Guatemalan authorities announced the arrest of five people for laundering money in a network which allegedly included Gloria Torres.
There are reportedly at least another 12 suspects still at large, including Torres, who has been missing since authorities issued a warrant for her arrest on November 30.
Gloria Torres is described as a key figure in Guatemala politics. She and two of her daughters are accused of laundering about 1.5 million quetzales (about $192,000 US dollars' worth of municipal funds between 2004 and 2006.
