Alleged Copper Thieves Go Free
posted (January 13, 2012)
And while BEL reportedly had a few of those very many unused transformers stolen, the company also continues to be preyed upon by copper thieves.

But today two of the men accused of stealing copper in May of 2011, got off those charges. The incident occurred at the BEL power plant, located at the junction of Democracia and the Western Highway, and the two men were charged with theft and damage to property.

They were acquitted today in the Magistrate's Court. They are 24 year old Jerome Swift and 25 year old Frederick Bradley. The items stolen were one perimeter ground copper wire, a value of three thousand dollars, and one ground grid copper wire with a value of two thousand dollars. The items that were damaged included fifteen thousand dollars' worth of grounding cables for the control room, one surveillance camera and one AC until evaporator. Magistrate Hettie Mae Stuart said that after she heard the testimony of Police Constable Bowen and Pascascio she found that there was not sufficient evidence to convict the accused persons.

Both constables testified that they responded to a report of a theft at the power plant and upon their arrival they saw three bicycles and three persons fleeing from there. They said they apprehended two of the three persons. Magistrate Stuart said there was no nexus and a bicycle was not enough evidence.
