posted (April 5, 2012)
A teenager will spend three years in jail for stealing a car.

Yesterday, 18 year-old Rodolfo Carrera was arraigned in Magistrate's Court for theft. His friend, 26 year-old Charles Requena, had been arraigned for handling stolen goods on Tuesday.

It is alleged that Carrera stole a 1997 Nissan Altima car, and left it with Requena.

The vehicle, valued at $3,200, belongs to Nicaraguan businessman Yadir Reyes, who reported to police that sometime between Saturday March 10 and the following day, his car was stolen.

Three weeks later, police investigation led them to an open lot on New Road, where they found the vehicle in Requena's possession.

Requena was detained, and when police questioned him, they found out that Carrera had brought the car to his house claiming that he owned it.

He left it with Requena and who decided to take the vehicle out for a spin, which is when police found him in it. Requena told police that he didn't know that the vehicle was stolen.

Police didn't believe him and as a result, they charged him with handling stolen goods. He appeared before Magistrate Hettie Mae Stuart on Tuesday where he pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was granted bail of $5,000.

But as a result of the information at that Requena gave to police, they then arrested Carrera. Police alleged that Carrera confessed in a caution statement that he was the one who stole the car from Reyes, and that he drove it to Requena's house.

As a result, they charged him with theft, and when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith, he pleaded guilty. The Chief Magistrate sentenced him to spend 3 years in prison.

It is Carrera's first conviction.
