In War Over Woman, Man Chops Man: 1 In Jail, 1 Gets Bail.
posted (April 5, 2012)
30 year-old John Emmanuel Brown and 31 year-old David Anthony Phillips got into a fight over a woman yesterday.

Now, it's not the kind of thing we usually report, but it happened in front of the Belcan Police Sub-Station! And that's why they ended up in court on charges brought against them because of complaints they lodged against each other.

According to Phillips, yesterday at around 7:30 a.m., he was near Belcan Bridge when he saw Brown approaching him.

Brown allegedly swung a machete at Phillips - while Phillips defensively threw a bike at him. But Brown swung again, this time Phillips blocked the machete with a forearm - but it inflicted a very deep wound.

The officers on duty intervened and arrested them both. Phillips was charged with wounding, and Brown was charged with aggravated assault and wounding.

The sitting magistrate entered Phillips into an equivocal not-guilty plea after he said that he defended himself with the bike. Brown pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Phillips was granted bail of $2,000, but he couldn't meet it, and he was remanded for the Easter Weekend.

Brown on the other hand was granted bail of $2,500; which the very same woman, who they were fighting over, posted for him, and he left the court a free man.

Rhaburn Ridge Man Scuttled Pol. Operation With Warning Text

Sending text messages is nothing new, and sending someone a heads-up? Well that happens every day - and it's no crime. But it was for a man who sent some friends a heads up that the police were coming!

41 year-old Noe Ortiz, a Guatemalan National of Rhaburn Ridge Village in the Belize District, was arraigned today for the charge of intentionally obstructing a police officer. It is alleged that he interfered with a police operation in the area.

According to Detective Sergeant Randy Sanchez, he and other officers were conducting a raid in Rhaburn Village for drugs and illegal weapons on Tuesday. Officer Sanchez claims that Ortiz saw them coming and sent out text messages to the residents that police were coming, and to properly hide their items.

Sanchez further claims that Ortiz's interference caused their operation to fail, and that's why they charged him with obstruction.

He pleaded not guilty to the charged when he appeared before Magistrate Sherigne Rodriguez, but there was an issue of offering him bail. He claims that he has a Belize Social Security card and residency documents, but he said that it is in someone else's possession - and apparently, not available by text.

As a result, Magistrate Rodriguez informed him that he would be held in custody until he can provide proof of residence, so that he can be offered bail.

Up to this afternoon, that proof was not provided to the court, and as a result, he was sent to prison, where he will remain until the long Easter weekend is over.

PROFILE

Tonight's I am Belize Profile is about Juan Vega - who's the Director of Rehabilitation at the Kolbe Central Prison. He didn't get that job by applying for it, he earned it by going to jail a dozen times for various drug related offences - even trafficking drugs in jail - while he was serving a sentence for drug trafficking!

Indeed, he's been down to the depths of drug-addiction - and now he's using the many wasted years of his life as an example to others. He explains how he went from addict to teacher in tonight's profile.
