30 year old Devin Swasey- the man who was bitten by a crocodile 6 days ago - has awakened from a coma. According to Swasey's mother, he is recovering exceptionally well. Swasey was attacked by a large crocodile on Thursday afternoon - while he was spearfishing in the Blackburn Lagoon in Crooked tree village. He was along with 2 other persons at the time who witnessed the incident. We understand that the croc held on to Swasey and pulled him under water for a period of time before he could be rescued. Today his mother spoke to 7news about how lucky her son is to be alive.

"My nephew came and ask me to please get up and change my clothes so that we can go to look for my son who got bitten by the crocodile, but before all this they wanted me to go with them for a walk and I ask them where - they told not to worry where and I told them that I have work to do, after that they told me what it was. I went to change my clothes and went with them but by that time they had already left with him to the ambulance."

"All I can say is that maybe he will survive because they told me that he got bitten in his head."

"I understand that he was in an induced coma and luckily now he is awake and actually talking to you. How is he doing now?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"He is doing fine; he talks now and tells us all kinds of things. He ran jokes, he tells me that his skin is dry, he wants lotion, he wants lip gloss for his lips because his lips are dry. He eats his food by himself."

"He was bitten in what part of his body?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"His head, shoulder and close to his ears."

"How many bites?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"I don't know roughly but what I can say it was about 3 bites."

"What was he doing there in the lagoon?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"He was fishing and diving."

"Something that he normally does?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"Yes."
Monica Bodden
"He was there with other persons?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"Yes, two men who are his partners."

"They told you what happened? What you understand happened?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"They told me that they told him to lets us but he says that he heard some fish "heartbeat" and that he was going to see where they are. He went and that's when he was attacked by the crocodile."

"The guys - what did they do?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"They didn't see him come back and when they look in the water they saw bubbles coming up."

"So the crocodile took him under?"

"The crocodile took him under the water."

"How they manage to get him out?"
Elisa Swasey, Mother
"They beat the water with a stick and they grab the crocodile from him."
Swasey received bites to his head, hands and shoulder and is still hospitalized at the KHMH.
