Doctors Can't Do Anything Else for 10 Year Old Brighton
posted (August 16, 2012)
For the past 3 weeks, we have been following the story of 10 year old Brighton Cordova - the little boy who was crushed beneath a house as it collapsed on him and his friend, 7 year old Jova Griffith.

Luckily for Jova, his injuries were not too serious and he was treated and released. But Brighton's injuries were far more severe. He suffered a cardiac arrest and severe head injuries and was put on life support. But, just days ago he was taken off the machine by doctors at the KHMH and is now breathing on his own. It might seem like quite an improvement for the young child but his diagnosis is still grim.

According to his family, more than half of Brighton's brain is damaged and doctors say there is nothing else they can do to help him. This afternoon he was discharged from the KHMH hospital and was transported in a Bert Ambulance to the Northern Regional Hospital in Orange Walk Town.

He will be cared for there in his hometown while his family tries to make arrangements to take him abroad for a second opinion. But, it's not looking too encouraging, yet still the family told Monica Bodden why they are holding unto hope:

Norma Cordova, Mother
"Brighton is stable and the doctor told us that we are going to get transfer to Orange Walk. The left side of his brain is damage. It consists of his movements because right now he is not moving, he is not eating, he eats through the tubes. At this moment he digests his food and the milk that they are giving him. Everything is okay because his heart is very strong, he has a strong pulse - everything is okay with him, only the movements he needs to recover."

Monica Bodden
"What are they telling you? Are they saying that there might be a chance of recovery or?"

Norma Cordova, Mother
"This morning I spoke to Dr. Grinage and he said that if we want we can seek further, maybe he can better that he is at this moment."

Monica Bodden
"So he is encouraging you guys to seek another opinion?"

Norma Cordova, Mother
"Yes. By the ending of the month we are going to do a telethon with universal radio to raise funds for the expenses that we will need money for."

"I as the mother when I see him there it's very hard for me."

Monica Bodden
"You remember that morning the incident that happened? Does it pain your mind regular?"

Norma Cordova, Mother
"Just this morning I was sitting down and what triggers my mind was when I heard him crying downstairs and after that I hear just that silence - that's the hardest part, I know that he was down there and cannot do anything, it's very painful. When I remember it, it makes me feel like something comes in my throat. It is very hard for me."

The bar-b-que sale for 10 year old Brighton will be happening on Saturday at the Queen Elizabeth Park in Orange Walk Town. If you would like to make donations to help little Brighton, you can at the Heritage Bank to account number 5211181 . You can also contact the family at telephone number 624-9099.
