US Park Service Gives Tips To Belize
posted (August 16, 2012)
Belize often boats that we have about 36% of our national territory under some kind of protected areas designation.

Well, that impressive but the US National Parks System is no slouch either. It has 397 areas in the system and today one of their Outdoor Recreation Planners, James Bacon visited Belize to discuss Best Practices with Belize's park managers.

Now, it's not that Yogi Bear wasn't available, it's just that Bacon says he may be able to learn a thing or two from Belize:..

James Bacon
"It was just to exchange information, learn from each other, share our best practices and some of the things that we need to improve in the United States and vice versa to here - take those messages and best practices back with me to United States."

Reporter
"Were there anything highlighted that we need to work on, on our end?"

James Bacon
"I think there are a lot of good things that you are already doing - great culture, great communities. I told the story to the folks here that they had a group who came down to Belize this year for tourism, they were on visit and they had a tour guide - they spent the entire day with him visiting a cave. They had a great time and they remembered this person individually and it was a highlight of their trip. So your guides here, your communities - you are doing a great job with that."

"Sounds like you had some infrastructure improvements - things that promote tourism that can take place here but otherwise you are doing a great job and just connect some more people with the places."

Bacon was here at the invitation of the US Embassy.
