PM Says No Reason To Consult Opposition Leader
posted (August 22, 2012)
And while the Government courts the IDB - they aren't about to do the same for the opposition.

The Leader of The Opposition has lamented the fact that they have not been consulted - and the PM today said Government has no reason to do so.

Here are his comments:

Prime Minister Dean Barrow - Prime Minister of Belize
"It was as a matter of courtesy, perhaps I might have called Mr. Fonseca to tell him beforehand that we wouldn't make the August payment. But, I don't think that Belizean would expect us to involve the Opposition in any serious way, in terms of the restructuring exercise. What's this? It's almost a kind of moral hazard. How will they-? So, what, later on they can say that they helped us to solve it? 'We had to kind of create that debt problem so that you all could have solve it.' Like when they destroyed the economy in order to save it - no, we will try to be at least minimally respectful of the fact that the Opposition is the Opposition, and it has a constitutional role to play. But, practically speaking, you will forgive us if we proceed very carefully."

Barrow says the Opposition will be briefed via whichever relevant house committee they serve on.
