Cop Shot At On Weekend: Four In Ten Days
posted (September 24, 2012)
The past 10 days has witnessed an unprecedented number of armed attacks on police officers. PC Errol Jones was shot at on September 14th in Belmopan; then on September 17th. Corporal Daniel Flowers was shot at near his Belize City home, constable Ervin Pech was stabbed In Ladyville on September 21st and then on September 22nd constable Julian Gladden was shot at also in Belize City.

Now, at least three of these officers were off duty - but it's still an alarming trend. We've already reported on the incidents with Constable Jones and Corporal Flowers - and we turn now to the two most recent attacks: constable Pech and constable Gladden.

At 2:30 am on 22nd September, Gladden was driving his personal vehicle on Vernon Street when at the corner of Vernon and Mayflower Streets he saw a man standing at the corner.

He reports that as he was about to pass the male person he heard a loud bang and looked back to see Kendis Flowers with his hand pointed towards the car.

He says Flowers then fired another shot at him, but Gladden escaped unhurt.

Today the police press officer told us they are taking it very seriously:..

Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"We are concern about it and that is why I have highlighted it that we are investigating this and we are looking for Kendis. He is saying that he has positively ID the person that he saw with that firearm at the corner of Mayflower and Vernon Streets as the person Kendis Flowers."

Marion Ali, reporter
"Have you been able to gather whether this was an act of vengeance? Maybe the officer had arrested Mr. Flowers prior to this or this was just a random attack upon a police officer?"

Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"A random attack."

21 year-old Kendis Flowers, a laborer with CYDP, and a resident of Mayflower, was arraigned today before Magistrate Aretha Ford for aggravated assault.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence, but because it was allegedly committed with a firearm, Magistrate Ford couldn't grant him bail. As a result, Flowers was remanded to prison until October 24, his next court date.
