A Book Launch With A Point Of Departure
posted (October 2, 2012)
A new publication was launched today at the Museum of Belize called "Revisiting the 10th and 21st". The book is a two-fold, with the first part depicting the documented facts leading up to and including the Battle of St George's Caye, and the second depicting the movement to and the declaration of Independence. It's a collaboration of NICH and the Belize Archives Service and its purpose is to provide actual documentation as a point of reference surrounding these two historic events. We found out more.

Dr. Herman Byrd - Director, Belize Archive
"This year we partnered both with the Museum of Belize and the other arm of NICH; The Institute of Social & Cultural Research with the Museum to produce the exhibit. We wanted to do something on a much larger scale than we have done before, so the folks here at the museum were able to do that for us and we also wanted to have something that visitors of the museum could walk away with and provide them the opportunity to dig deeper into some of the materials that they would have seen going through the exhibit."

"The publication has two main sections; there are 19 documents all together. There are 10 documents covering the Battle of St. George's Caye and it kind of basically covers the timeframe of before, during and after - sort of to provide a comprehensive of that critical event and the second section has 9 documents that deals with the whole movement of Independence from 1949 - 1981."

"We try very hard to provide firsthand accounts, eye witness accounts, actual speeches of the individuals for example we have speeches of Mr. Goldson at the UN, George Price at the UN at the start of the internationalization effort to win global support for Belize. There is nothing like reading a primary document to sort of get you up close and personal to historical event and we try hard to do that."

"We've been working on it for over 2 months identifying the records. Some of them have been publish before but those publications are no longer available - they are not readily available to the public out there. We especially had teachers in mind because it's the kind of thing that I wish I had when I was a teacher teaching Belizean studies may years ago to have a booklet like this that you can use in so many ways in the classroom."

The public is encouraged to stop by the Museum of Belize and check out the display.
