CEMO's Student Experiment
posted (November 21, 2012)
5 weeks ago, 7News told you about the survey that the City Emergency Management Organization wanted to conduct using the high school students.

The survey is targeted to getting information about the location and evacuation arrangements which need to be made for all the residents living with disabilities.

It is a novel idea because CEMO wants to use the untapped human resources which exists in the high schools by getting the students to be the surveyors on the ground.

Well, the planning stage of this project is over, and on Monday, CEMO will launch a pilot in the Belama area. It will involve 130 high school students from Saint John's College, and today, representatives from NEMO and CEMO held a press conference to inform the public on how it will work.

Here's what the Councilor for responsibility told the media about how the residents of Belama can identify the student surveyors:

Phillip Willoughby - Councilor, CEMO
"The execution of the pilot survey is for the Belama area 3 and 4. This will be conducted on the 26th November 2012 commencing at 9am sharp. There will be an incident command center at the Belama police sub-formation and it is from there it will operate from as the students will be dispatched by streets, in zones to execute said exercise."

"You will note that the students will be in their area on Monday in full uniform/ no uniform. They will be wearing such IDs, they will be flyers, that if case the team goes to your residence and you are not there - one of these surveys flyers will be left and we hope that you communicate back and get in touch back with the contact numbers or email addresses and then we go back to re-visit the household where no one was at and conduct the survey."

"The media does have a copy of the survey and assessment form. I believe to our mind they are quite simple and straightforward to the point as we embark on engaging with families and household in the data collection to build this database."

The pilot is a one-day effort, and after Monday's effort, the authorities will assess the level of success and make the necessary adjustments before they launch the program to cover the entire city.
