Marcial Mes' Victim Speaks from her Hospital Bed
posted (January 30, 2007)

But according to the family of the victims, it's not enough. Today, Keith Swift spoke to Samantha Romero - the young lady who was knocked down, and her rage was palpable. Here's the story.

Keith Swift Reporting,
Today for the first time since she along with her 2-year-old nephew were allegedly knocked down by the Honorable Marcial Mes, 15 year old Samantha Romero spoke publicly.

Samantha Romero,
"Mr. Mes got me in a lot of pain."

Because most of teeth were knocked out, Samantha experienced some difficulty speaking to us. She says she doesn't remember much about Sunday evening's accident. All she knows is that one minute she and nephew were on their way to church and the next minute she was in a hospital bed with broken limbs and bruises and scrapes all over her face.

Samantha Romero,
"I was completely off the road, I wasn't in front of the white line, I was completely off the road and then I was waiting for my sister to cross but then meanwhile I turned my back looking towards the church and then right there he must have 'clapped me' while my back was turned towards the vehicle. When he knocked me, I didn't know from which part - if it was from back on or front on. All I know is I thought I was dreaming but when I got conscious back then I started to hear people talking to me and thing but I still didn't wake up that good."

The 15-year-old cries shame on the Honorable Mes who she says acted dishonorably when he got behind the wheel of his Nissan Patrol. Samantha says the least Mes can do now to make this situation right is pay her family's mounting medical bills.

Samantha Romero,
"I just want Mr. Mes see the damage which he did and that he could pay for everything what happened right now, what is taking place. I hope he could pay for everything he did because he caused this. He must have seen me and the baby but that is why they say not to drink and drive. And he is a big Minister, it is a shame on him to see what he did to we because right now we are punishing, the baby is punishing too.

I just want him to see what he did to we. He is a big Minister for him to be about the place drinking and the drive and not looking at where he is going. I just want to let him know that he will take care of me until I get better good and don't put any expense on my parents nor none of my family because none of them caused it, he caused it. I just want Mr. Mes see what he did and God will forgive him for that."

But while Samantha can forgive Mes, it will take much more to convince Keniesha Romero. She is Samantha's older sister and the mother of 2-year-old Denver. The 2 year old has been in and out of consciousness since the incident but Keniesha says he is slowly improving.

Keniesha Romero,
"Right now I don't know if he is unconscious or if he is asleep or what but he is not responding. He doesn't respond as yet from this happened. He doesn't know that I am his mother and he doesn't know anybody else and thing like that but the doctor says that he is doing okay."

Keniesha along with family and friends have been keeping vigil at Samantha and Denver's bedsides around the night. She says she is disappointed that the man who allegedly caused all this - the Honorable Marcial Mes - hasn't even bothered to visit his victims at the hospital. His preferred mode of communication is over the phone.

Keniesha Romero,
"He apologized but he knows that he shouldn't be drinking and drinking. If he wants to drink, he is a big Minister - hire a driver and you go and drink and let that man be in charge of driving me around and thing like that. He says he is sorry and thing like that but I don't he is sorry because if he was sorry he would be here from a long time ago if he was sorry."

Keniesha too laments that she is in a financial crisis and unable to pay the medical bills for her son Denver and sister Samantha.

Keniesha Romero,
"I want to see him in person because he's only calling and calling and don't come and see. He only says that he will take care of the bills. All the bills right now, right now we have a lot of expense and everything here you have to got the money in cash to pay. Even just now we went in with my child for the CAT scan. Supposed he was in a real real emergency what would I do if I didn't have the money to pay? They held him outside until I went to pay the money and then they took him in. And I really don't know what to do. all the money that I have, I didn't have any money - it is just people lending me money to do this."

Mes's case has been adjourned to February 27th. Later on in the newscast, we'll have more on the fallout from the accident as Jules Vasquez looks deeper into Mes's suspension, and offers a political commentary on the alliance between Mes and Prime Minister Musa.
