Taking Sides Within The UDP
posted (November 23, 2012)
As we told you last week - there's a major internal battle shaping up in the UDP for its national convention on February 17th., 2013. Chairman Patrick Faber wants to challenge Deputy Leader Gaspar Vega for the party's first Deputy.

That also means challenging a sitting Deputy Prime Minister - which, to our knowledge, has never been done before. And so, the stakes are high and both camps have hit the campaign trail. It's not the kind of thing that gets much publicity outside the party - but we did get out hands on this picture, which says a lot.

It was taken last week at the Caribbean Shores Constituency Office where Vega is seen with his candidate for Chairman Alberto August and supporters John Saldivar and Rene Montero. We are told he has the support of the entire Cayo Caucus, which represents six seats and dozens of delegates.

Faber is campaigning with Corozal's Roosevelt Blades for Chairman. Blades is currently the Deputy Chairman. All candidates have until a month before the convention to formally submit their names.

Interestingly, it's thought to be an all or nothing gamble for Faber because if he loses his bid for Deputy, he will also lose the powerful party chairmanship.

All this internal jostling has no direct effect on Cabinet assignments.
