Meyers' Mom Speaks: Says "Ghost" Is Gonna Get GSU!
posted (January 9, 2013)
Tonight, the city remains peaceful after a rough Tuesday - that forced a panic induced, city-wide shutdown. But today, there has been no violence, and Dean Street remains locked down from West Canal through its junctions with Plues Street, George Street, up to West Street at the Police substation.

Today the GSU continued paramilitary style searches in the area -which did not sit well with residents, but the GSU continues undeterred. And the reason residents are angry is as we have told you: they remain certain that the GSU killed 30 year oldLeonard "Ghost" Meyers, 19 year old Albert "Long John" Fuentes, 40 year old Keino Quallo, and 28 year old Anthony Perez.

In terms of George Street seniority, the most prominent among them was Leonard Ghost Meyers. He was considered to be George Street Boss Shiney Tillett's closest companion - and today his mother spoke for the first time. She'll be the first to tell you that she's not the average mother - she says she's shed no tears for her son, and told Monica Bodden why:

Elizabeth Welch Escarpeta - Mother of Lenard "Ghost" Meyers
"I am Lenard Meyer's Mother. I haven't shed a single tear as yet, and I am not going to shed any until I get the satisfaction for what the GSU did to my son. And from the time they told me that they killed 'Ghost', I thought that it was the GSU who killed him because they always - they told me, 'You will bury your son very soon.' I told them, 'When I bury my son, you all will bury me too.' And when I went out there, the amount of crowd out there, I just held my corner because I am a strong black woman. The thing that hurt me was the way they brought out my son. He was the only one whose face wasn't covered. What happen, are they showing us and sending a message to us? No, they can't send any message to me. Send that to the Almighty Father who created us because I know that it was the GSU who killed those boys. The day before, they went around there and told them, 'If you can't go to jail, we'll see that you all die.' But, whosoever killed my son, you tell that Ms. Welch says - this is over the media - that their day is coming because I will make sure that Ghost get back to whosoever killed."

Monica Bodden
"So, did you think that your son could have been taken down that easily?"

Elizabeth Welch Escarpeta
"No, not Ghost, he is a man - a boy - who would have fought for his life, he would have died, and whoever came to do it would have died as well, or they would been crippled. So, we would have known who killed them. They have a court case with the GSU next month. So, they are trying to kill out those boys so that they can't provide evidence for what they did. But, if they want a witness, I was there, and I am will to speak and testify. I held my corner, and I saw and heard everything. They can't Ghost just like that. He would have fought for his life. My son didn't die like that, not so easy. I don't want to call any names; I'll wait until this thing goes further, and then I will call names, and who gets mad, is mad. They will have to kill me, because I know that the GSU killed my son."

Monica Bodden
"The Police Commissioner said that he has full confidence that his officers were not involved."

Elizabeth Welch Escarpeta
"The Commissioner of Police? Well the Commissioner of Police is a - I don't even want to say who he is - because he is a real simpleton, and an idiot. Didn't he go to college? You don't need to know how to read or write to get the sense of what happened at that boutique. What's wrong with him? Do he feel like there are idiots around here? Does he feel like Manatee people are foolish? Well, I went to college, sir, and you can't tell me that. You can't tell any of us that."

Monica Bodden
"When you saw your son's body, what state was it in?"

Elizabeth Welch Escarpeta
"The throat was cut, slit big, and he had stabs in his chest. Then, the way that his hand was in the morgue, you could see that Ghost was handcuffed. How will you fight somebody when your hands are cuffed? And the position that my son was in, you can see that it was them who killed him. It wasn't any gang, or anything related to any drugs. Don't put that in this at all. The GSU killed those boys at the boutique. And I will stand up for my son because whoever killed him - I want you to get this on the TV - whosoever killed Ghost - I am not worrying about the other 3 - I will make sure that Ghost comes back for you all. I am not going to shed any tears, bury, I will not shed any tears until I am finished doing what I have to do because the GSU, I am telling you what I saw them do with us. From me, but I hold my ground because I am a woman, I am not afraid to die because I realize that God create us to die sometime. But, believe me, before I am dead, they will see my face."

Elizabeth Welch Escarpeta says her son had been in Gales Point up to Monday night when he was killed.

And while she insists that the GSU killed her son, for balance, we note that the GSU, the Police, the Prime Minister and, for that matter, the Leader of the Opposition have all discounted that theory. The commander of the GSU Marco Vidal called the claim "unfounded and baseless."
