Corozal Cops Foil Kidnappers; Rescue "Million Dollar Baby"
posted (March 26, 2013)
Last night, Corozal police recovered an infant child that was being held for almost a million dollar ransom! We've been following this developing story since yesterday, but Police asked us to hold off on reporting it because the kidnappers allegedly told the family that if the media or police got involved, the baby would have been killed.

But police did get involved, and made a dramatic rescue of the child last night. But the abduction happened 24 hours earlier. According to our information, on Sunday night the mother was driving with her one year old daughter on the ITVET Road on the outskirts of Corozal town when 2 vehicles blocked her path.

Gunmen jumped out of the vehicles, and grabbed the child, while holding the mother stationary at gunpoint. They reportedly told the mother that if they pay a ransom, the child would be returned, but they also threatened to kill the baby if she reported the matter to the police or the press. Multiple reports to 7News say that the kidnappers were asking for as much as $450,000 thousand US dollars for her safe return.

But there was a turn of events last night around 10:00 when information led police to intercept a white pickup truck on the seaside in Corozal town. They found two males and a female with the child. The child was returned safely to her mother and the three persons remain detained. We are told that the one year old had some bruises on her body but was in good condition otherwise.

The three persons have reportedly told police that they were just holding the child for the ringleader who sent them into town to avoid police scrutiny.

Whatever the case, the child is back home safe with her mother tonight; three persons are detained and others are being sought. We'll have more on this tomorrow.
