Reaching Out In Rhaburn Ridge
posted (March 26, 2013)
Last night, we told you about the US Army Southcom's New Horizon project which is building schools and providing medical care to select communities across Belize.

Well, there are other US organizations on goodwill missions in Belize, and one of them is the Students for the International Mission Service, who have started their own outreach efforts in Rhaburn Ridge Village in the Belize District. One of the representatives told us about what they plan to do:

Shaun Kelly Plafker - Students for the International Mission Service
"We're doing a local health fair for the communities here at Rayburn Ridge and the surrounding areas. We have students from the Universities, and doctors who are putting on a health fair."

"Okay, besides from a health fair, I see construction taking place. Explain what's happening."

Shaun Kelly Plafker
"There's another group from California that's here helping the local church build classrooms and restrooms for the church and they're building a school."

Reporter
"This is an initiative from you guys or is this imitative from the community?"

Shaun Kelly Plafker
"This is from their community; the building is from their community. The health fair here is from my University."

Reporter
"Okay, why is it important to hold fair such as this one, why do you see it important?"

Shaun Kelly Plafker
"To let the locals - I know a lot of people here in the area; it's hard for them to get down to Belize City or to clinics or to see a doctor. So we wanted to bring something to them in their own community. It's free of charge and just to help them so that they know and are aware of what's happening with their health, and to bring medical attention to them in their own community."

The contingent of university students is from the state of California, and they arrived in Belize yesterday.
