Getting The Jump On Father’s Day
posted (April 19, 2013)
Father's Day is 2 months away, but the President of The Association for Belizean Artists First, Tony Wright, is already making his rounds to promote his 5th annual Fathers' Day Song Competition and Concert.

And this one is unique because the organization is accepting entries from only high school students. That's a major departure from prospective contestants, and so, Tony Wright, the competition's organizer stopped by 7News a few weeks early to get the message out to the public.

Here's what he told us about his collaboration this year with the Ministry of Education and Youth.

Tony Wright - Organizer, Father's Day Song Competition "It's the fifth year we are doing Father's day song competition and concert. The difference about this year is that, for the last four years it was open for all musicians or artists to write a song. Last year when we did it we had some people from the Ministry of education and youths and they were all excited about it and they contacted us. They asked if we didn't want to do something with the youths and we agreed and we said sure that is a great idea so what we are doing this year is working with all the high schools. Father's day song competition and concert is exclusively for all high schools and so that we are at it now to get the information out to all the schools in Belize. So send in your song, write about your Dad and write something nice so that you get a chance to win from the association. First place 1,000 dollars, second $500 and third place $300.00 dollars and the ministry of education and youth say that they will match it so they will give $1.000 dollars tuition fee along with the $1.000 dollars that we are giving, $500 tuition fee for second place, and $300.00 tuition fee for third place so that means that the winner gets $2,000 for first place, $1,000 second and $600 third place and so we want all the youths from the different high schools to be a part of this years' Father's day song competition and concert. We believe that the it is important to have the youths aboard."

Students who would like to make entries can record their song, and mail it to 6720 Western Avenue. The song must not be longer than 5 minutes and must contain only positive lyrics about fathers. The Deadline for submissions is May 30, 2013. For additional information, members of the public can call 203-2284, or 625-3967.
