Legal Drag Racing In Belize?
posted (April 22, 2013)
All day yesterday, residents of the Belama area heard cars revving, and racing up and down the newly cemented Chetumal Boulevard. They were rag racing – which is usually a public menace and an illegal practice. But not this time; it was Westtrac's first annual high octane car show.

The highlight was the first ever legal drag race - with permission from the Mayor of course.

Today one of the organizers, told 7news that the event was more than a success.

Ron Lecky - Organizer of Car Show
"What we had was Westrac's first annual High-Octane car show and it consisted of a car show and a drag racing event. Everybody was excited because it was the first legal drag racing for Belize."

Monica Bodden
"This is a residential area. Were there any safety measures put in place yesterday for the Drag Race?"

Ron Lecky
"Yes, we put that into full consideration. We got in contact with the Mayor, City Council and the Police. We found out what we needed to do. We had police officers that were quick to respond if anything happened. Their presence was well felt. They had borders for people to stand behind and made safe stopping distances. Safety was our first and foremost priority."

Monica Bodden
"Are you guys concerned that maybe by yesterday's event, it might be encouraging Drag Racing on the new boulevard?"

Ron Lecky
"You see we made it clear to everyone that we are trying to do a legal event and if they continue to abide by the laws then this can become an annual or semi-annual thing and everybody agreed with that. Everyone is going to put their part to even stop the other ones that might want to try anything. Everyone loves the new boulevard. If they damage it then we won't have it. Everyone wants to cooperate, all the members of the different car clubs were excited even the Mexican that came. That's not a concern right now as far as I know everyone is cooperating and trying to do everything the right way so that we can keep on having more and more events. With this event, as they came in they signed up to the International Car Show association form, we did everything by international standards. The form was actually the judging sheet so we got their car information, license plate, model, year and their names. When we got around to the cars we took that same form then that was judged on that. After that we tallied up the forms and then we gave out the prizes for best show car, performance car, truck and so forth. The drag race was by who won the race."

Westrac plans to make its car show an annual event.
