An HIV Awareness Video
posted (April 25, 2013)
The Belize Aids Commission has collaborated with some of its partner agencies and a group of Belizean artists to create a music video focusing on the importance of safe sex. The project has been in the making for some months now and was recently completed. It's all part of giving the prevention message some public awareness with mass appeal. The video is called " Da You Ah Want" and we spoke to some of the artists.

Martin Cuellar, Director of the National Aids Commission
"The message of the song is very cruel, its very strong, its very simple and that is one of always protecting yourself with sexual relations but doing so in a way that uplifts you and your partner in a very hunmanistic manner; so it's about love really, at the end of the day it's about love to self respect and love for those that you are partnering with and it does it in a beautiful way because it speaks of a very clear message that repeats and is resounding throughout the video and through the lyrics of the song for one to enjoy life but in a positive way which is filled with respect and love."

Jenko - Belizean Artist
"My involvement is that we were commissioned by NCFC, UNDP, as Pocono Bwi Productions, myself and Rich, to do a song and video for their campaign ' Wait and nuh worry' or 'choose and use' which is about abstinence for youths and adults to use protecion."

Monica Bodden
"Tell us the whole concept of the video"

Jenko
"It is very simple. If you check it out you will see that it is in a black and white - a white background to differentiate between the two, between abstinence and protection. In the song we have Jackie Castillo, Denise Castillo, Tanya Carter, Concego, Myro, myself and Nello Player, I hope I am not missing anybody."

Monica Bodden
"And the video was shot right here in Belize?"

Jenko
"Yes it was shot right here in Belize, actually upstairs of Pocono bwi Studios"

Tanya Carter
"Jenko gave us a call and he wanted five artists to come together in order to spread the word against protection, agarinst HIV and also abstinence from sex and I decided to jump along becuase it is a good way to get out to the youths and to let them understand the reprucussions of sex being too early and also if you are going to, to abstain or wrap it up. I just wanted to help out where I can; the youths are the core of Belize and we wanted to make sure that we use our popularity to lend for a better cause and a greater cause so we just decided to go ahead and do the song."

Jackie Castillo
"I was called to be a part of 'Da you ah want' so I have a verse where I am doing one of the last females in the song and my verse includes Jenko and Myro 'El Foundaish' "

Monica Bodden
"Tell us a little bit about yoru part."

Jackie Castillo
"It was an interesting collaboration to be a part of the video. We all wrote our own parts and then we collaborated on some parts so it created a lot of interesting dynamics to a part of the 'Da you ah want' video. This idea came about a while ago and then Jenko was approached by NCFC and all of us in the artists community are not just artists but we are also friends so we just buzzed each other up and said this sounds like a good cause so all of us got together; we did a bit of research and wrote our parts and then the video came about."

Nello Player
"I collaborated with Jenko, Myro, Jackie, Tanya, Denise, Concego to be a part of the 'Da you ah want' video. I just looked at it as an opportunity once again to reach the younger population and speak to them more about safe sex and abstinence."

The music video was shot in Belize by Pocono Bwai Production Company and it can be viewed on the National Aids Commission Facebook page.
