The Story Behind The Baby Crushed By Truck Tire
posted (August 12, 2013)
On Friday we told you about the tragic case of an infant – who was crushed by a bus tyre in Buttercup, just outside Burrell Boom. It happened on Thursday evening, and by early Friday morning, the 11 month old was dead. Monica Bodden went looking for some answers today:….

This bus tire mounted on a steel rim fell on an 11 month old infant on Friday evening. It happened just outside of Burrel Boom village around 4pm. The child who was playing outside in the yard was left unattended by his mother for a brief moment when the tragedy occurred.

Alan Rhaburn - Grand-Uncle and Neighbor
"His mom said that she put him to sit down and they were picking up Craboo under the tree and she left him there but he's just starting to walk so he got up from where he was and he went towards the tire and the only way I could put it is, he might have crept there and held on the tire to stand up and the tire fell over him. The tire had on a rim and it was pumped up because it was to go on the bus the same morning and he forgot it. In a way he says he blames himself, but I told him he can't blame himself."

It was this neighbor who first assisted with the young child, who was alive and fighting for his life.

Alan Rhaburn
"About after 4 I had just come in from Belize, I got into my house and I was taking off my shoes and I had a bad headache so I was about to lay down. While I was taking off my shoes I heard two persons crying and they were running. So I ran out with my shoes off and when I looked I saw the lady was coming with the baby in her hand and she was screaming to me 'my baby will die, he will die' and I took the baby from her, I held him and gave him mouth to mouth and then he cried. After he cried, I told her that we needed to get him out of there so she went and got the car. I took the baby out by the road there and I called 911 and the police man answered and I told him that I needed the ambulance to meet a white car on the road and he said he would call right away."

"At that point was the child still alive?"

Alan Rhaburn
"Yes, we left and he was still alive - we reached the nurse and he was still alive. But the nurse told us they had to get him to the hospital quickly."

The child survived approximately 11 hours before he succumbed to his injuries around 3am on Saturday morning at the KHMH. So far police are investigating.

ASP Chris Noble - Regional Executive Officer
"We've looked into a report of a child that passed at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital - we have established that the child was in the Burrel Boom area and was with the mother. There may have been some difficulty with the mother looking out for the child or the mother looking at the child. The information we have is that an object may have fallen upon the child; he was taken to the hospital and subsequently succumbed. That child was very young and we're looking to putting everything together and taking it over to the DPP. The post mortem is scheduled for 1pm today and the findings will be attached to the file."
