Stevedores Says Union Pres “Pancho” Must Resign By Friday
posted (August 14, 2013)

Yesterday, we showed you the move that is afoot to remove the President and the General Secretary of the Christian Workers Union. It is a dispute which the stevedores have initiated.

The stevedores are claiming that Antonio Gonzalez and James McFoy have crippled their negotiations with the Port of Belize, and more importantly, they HAVE NEGLECTED important duties which keeps the union accredited and recognized by law and leaving it indefinitely suspended from the NTUCB.

The stevedores have given Gonzalez and McFoy until Friday to vacate their offices peacefully, and they told us that he already accepted their ultimatum.  Well, in a letter sent to the stevedores yesterday, that was certainly not the position he and McFoy took.

Addressing their complaint of a lack of accountability, both executive members promised to have a financial statements finalized within two months of the date of the letter.

The stevedores gave him until Friday, but according to the letter, McFoy and Gonzalez promise that a National General Meeting will be held by March 2014, and that Gonzalez will not seek re-election. Gonzalez gives no indication that he will vacate the office before the election, and certainly not by Friday.

Addressing the NTCUB suspension, the letter says that by next month, the CWU will resume payments to the umbrella union, and they will attend the NTUCB meetings.  The letter ends by urging the stevedore committee to resume negotiations with the Port of Belize to try to reach a resolution.

And as soon as stevedores Deon Pitter and Raymond Rivers received the letter, they sought legal advice, and they responded, on behalf of the stevedores, with a stinging 4 point letter of their own, which was addressed to Gonzalez.

Responding to the Financial statements being prepared in 2 months' time, both stevedores said that Gonzalez has failed to indicate which financial periods of which years, since they claim that it has been many years since one has even been produced.

According to the letter, March 2014, is far too late to call a National General Meeting, and that they are formally requesting that he call this General meeting within 1 week.

They also indicated that since the legal status of the Executive Committee of the CWU can be challenged, they are putting him on notice that Gonzalez's executive has no authority to spend union funds hereafter.

The letter ends that Gonzalez and McFoy must resign by midday tomorrow, or quote "face the consequence" End Quote.

Gonzalez has not taken our calls, and he has not answered our text message requests for an interview.
