posted (March 31, 2014)
There are 3 KILLINGS to report tonight. 2 of them are being treated as murder, and the third is a fatality resulting from an armed encounter between Guatemalan civillians and the Belizean military.

We start first with the murder of Hector "Bad Card" Lyons who was shot to death last night in Belize City. Lyons was just a few hours away from his 57th Birthday, but instead of planning a celebration, his family, is now preparing for his burial.

Daniel Ortiz has been following the story, and here's his report:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
57 year-old, Hector Dean Lyons, better known as "Bad Card", lay dead on the steps of this house at the on West Canal Street, the last place he was seen alive before still unknown man mercilessly gunned him down.

We understand that he was talking with a friend on those steps, usual behavior, since he was known to be very sociable.

At a few minutes after 7, a gunman crept up on the two friends and shot Lyons in the head. His friend ran, and before the gunman retreated, he then reportedly shot Lyons a second time to make sure that the deed was properly done. The assailant then rode off on bicycle, making his escape.

His family told us today that it was a gruesome execution-style slaying, which didn't match his personality.

"That is my best half and I don't know how I feel right now, I feel like part of me is gone, like a part of me is missing. I ended up in the hospital when I got the news and I just came out because I got a stroke. He had just spoken to me and he told me 'Lola, I will come up there tomorrow and I will bring you cut for you' and something else that he have for me. But he takes care of his children, he take care of me to the max. From the time I live with him I have never work for a day in my entire life - he took care of everything. God knows, you don't know how I feel right now."

"I understand he was sitting outside entertaining another friend of his when the gunman came up and shot him in his head. That's what I understand."

Though no one has come forward to say that they saw when the gunman robbed him of his possessions after he fell to the ground, the family says that they suspect robbery was the motive.

Lyons is known to have cash on him, and he was yet to collect over $20,000 which he won from playing the Boledo.

"We were made to understand that he had just won boledo, like a huge...."

"Yes, he calls me and told me; he says Lol's I will bring your cut for you tomorrow because he was to go to a doctor appointment this morning. He said he will bring my cut for me tomorrow and something else that he had gotten for me. I said alright then and I ask how much he had won and he says that he will surprise me. He is a guy who always has money because he gambles. Everybody knows, I am not ashamed to tell you, they call him "bad card" because he gambles with card and thing. That is his thing, but he had money on him. I don't know what to say if it is money. But I have a feeling that someone set out a hit on him."

Lyons is the father of 3 children, all of whom are teenagers. The last murder in the City happened 4 weeks ago.
