An Arresting Look At Powerful Women
posted (May 30, 2014)
Artist Briheda Haylock has opened a very interesting exhibit at the House of Culture. She's taken photographs of some of the most powerful women in Belizean society, but with a slight twist.

It's called "Milestone", and while the exhibit focuses on some of the women trail blazers in the society, she's managed to get a perspective most people don't see.

She explained it to us today:

Briheda Haylock, artist
"Milestone is to showcasing visually 12 women who are Belize's first, they accomplished the first female positions for certain roles, like you have Elona Smiling, the first female reverend, Ann Marie, the first female journalist - people like that, those accomplishments. We couldn't get everyone so the organization selected a few and I went about and contacted them after that and setup the shoots. What I wanted to do was not take their picture and be like this Marie Sharp, first female entrepreneur with her product the pepper and stuff, no. I wanted to give people an experience what it is to be a woman fighting for certain roles because it's not an easy task. What I did, I have them talk to me, when I am doing the interview I am taking photos because you get more raw emotion that way as opposed to saying smile for me, no, I didn't want that. It's too structures, organized - I didn't want that. I wanted real emotions and when you look at it you feel it and the funny thing is they are just talking, but that moment that I captured says something more that was intended or was happening at the time."

The exhibit, supported by the office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children, opened tonight, and will be available for viewing for the next 2 weeks.
