Byron Pope Won’t Go To Glasgow
posted (June 30, 2014)
Cyclist Byron Pope, the defending national road champions and and one of Belize's hopes for a medal at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this year, will have to miss the Games. That's after he injured two spinal vertebrae when he had a terrible accident this weekend.

It happened this weekend when he was competing in Saturday's individual time trials for the national road championships. During his ride, he ended up collided with a parked vehicle while competing in last organized by the Cycling Federation of Belize on the Burrell Boom bypass road on Saturday, June 28.

Reportedly Pope's service vehicle was trying to signal him about the parked vehicle ahead, but as Pope had his head down with his streamlined helmet on to achieve maximum velocity, he did not see the stationary vehicle until it was too late.

Byron Pope is at home recovering from that accident, and the doctor's prognosis is not yet known. He fractured two vertebrae and this will mean months of physiotherapy before he recovers to full capacity again.

The Cycling Federation is wishing him a speedy recovery, but the estimation is that he won't be competing any time soon, at least for the next few months.
