Cervantez Sr. Still Missing, Police Working On Leads
posted (July 4, 2014)
Orange Walk businessman Ramon CervantezSr is still missing tonight - and best reports say his family still hasn't heard from him. Now, rumours say differently, but reliable sources close to the family maintain that they have not been contacted and no demands - such as a ransom - have been made of them.

Orange Walk Police have not upgraded his status; they still have him listed as a missing person and this afternoon officer commanding for the North, Superintendent Joseph Myvette explained why:..

Supt. Joseph Myvette - Commander, Northern Police Region
"Investigations still continues. We are following several leads but so far we haven't had much successes, but we are following some leads."

Reporter
"Is this being treated as missing person case still?"

Supt. Joseph Myvette
"Yes it is."

Reporter
"Not kidnapping contrary to reports?"

Supt. Joseph Myvette
"Not to my knowledge."

Reporter
"What's the allegations that somebody saw him being crossed by 3 men over to the Mexican side? Are you guys following that with your Mexican counterparts?"

Supt. Joseph Myvette
"We are in contact with our Mexican counterparts, but we haven't had that information."

Reporter
"Sir, could you tell us what you believe, I mean the police must have some idea of what is happening after 3 days. What do you believe happened to Ramon Cervantes Sr.?"

Supt. Joseph Myvette
"That is what we are trying to determine. Hence the reason for the searches and the different operations that we have been carrying out."

Reporter
"When will the searches seized?"

Supt. Joseph Myvette
"We will go on for as long as it takes. It's a missing person and we are endeavoring to find that person. I personally had the occasion to speak to one of the persons who was detained on Wednesday and he confirmed to me that he had not received any mistreatment at the hands of the police. And I can also confirm to you that those persons detained on Tuesday late are not in police custody at this time."

Reporter
"I understand there was a gentleman that came in with his lawyer and he was let go after being questioned. Is that true?"

Supt. Joseph Myvette
"I would have to check into that. We are continuing our normal stop and search which we've been doing on a weekly basis, so all those different units are not necessarily confine to this operation."

Reporter
"I know you said that you are following several leads and none of them have really given any positive results, but we notice that most of the work is being concentrated around the border areas: San Roman, San Antonio. Is there any reason why is this happening around this area only?"

Supt. Joseph Myvette
"Well, if you are aware the farm is somewhere on the San Roman road, so that's why we are maintaining a presence in that area. We have already concluded our searches within the immediate area of the farm, but we continue to extend our patrols to that area."

So far 6 statements have been recorded and Cervantez's farm has been fully searched.

We have also learned that Ramon Cervantez Jr, known as "Monchie" has gone across the border to Chetumal to file a missing persons report. Police on that side of the border have pledged to assist.

It has now been 75 hours since the 71 year old was last heard from. On Tuesday afternoon after a missing persons report was made, Cervantez's Land Rover was found abandoned at his cane field off San Roman Road. Police reportedly found signs which suggested that Cervantes was taken against his will.
