Cervantes Jr. Speaks On Father’s Cruel End
posted (July 7, 2014)
While that's the scene outside the Orange Walk Police Station and Court house, if you noticed, none of the Cervantes family were there today. They were busy planning a memorial service to mark their patriarch's passing.

That service took place La Immaculada Catholic Church in Orange Walk this afternoon at around 3.

Ramon "Monchie" Cervantez Jr. Like his father, is a politician - and the current standard bearer for the PUP in Orange Walk North. Because of this public profile, the duty of being family spokesperson has fallen to him.

He told us that he is grateful to all their well-wishers and those members of the public who kept the family in their prayers:

Ramon Miguel Cervantes - Son of the Deceased
"I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. Everyone that was out here for the memorial mass, yesterday for the funeral, those and last night at the wake. Those who gave up their time searching in the search groups, the police force, I think elements of the BDF - I hope I don't miss anyone. All those people who I didn't get a chance to have personal contact with because of distance or some other reason, but they had us in their thoughts, in their prayers. We really thank you on behalf of my family - thank you all."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir, we know that your family would have wanted this outcome to be a lot different, but can you tell us since you spoke with us on Wednesday, how has it been for your family that constant worry and wait?"

Ramon Miguel Cervantes - Son of the Deceased
"Well the closure wasn't how we wanted it. During the wait the days were long and it didn't turn out how we wanted it, but in life we can't get everything the way we want it."

Daniel Ortiz
"At this point we don't want to come across as if though we are insensitive in any kind of way, but we might not get another opportunity to ask, so sir can we ask at this point, does your family still believe that someone abducted your father?"

Ramon Miguel Cervantes - Son of the Deceased
"Yes and he was killed."

Daniel Ortiz
"And then one last question sir: at any point in a communication with your father, was there any indications from him or anyone else who contacted your family if any contact was made if any demands to your family in termsof monetary or otherwise?"

Ramon Miguel Cervantes - Son of the Deceased
"The case is still in progress. I would not want to say anything that would hurt the case or influence the case or prejudice the case in any way and with all due respects I think you would understand. I would prefer the case to be closed. After that I think I will be willing to give our story."

"I think everyone should take the example of my father especially the young people to work the soil, be productive for your country, work hard, be responsible, be discipline - we have to make that change."

And so - while police aren't saying anything, really, and the family can't say much - here's what we have found out after checking and cross checking information with multiple sources for the past 48 hours.

First, there is a credible report that the whole case blew open on Saturday night when plainclothes police overheard two men talking loosely in an Orange Walk Restaurant and Bar. They were detained and one of them reportedly provided the information which led police directly to that remote location on the Honey Camp Lagoon Road.

Since then police have detained those two persons and are seeking the mastermind - a deportee who has reportedly absconded to Mexico. Police promised us a wanted poster for him yesterday, but flatly refused to release it today. Mexican authorities have been informed of this person's identity and he is being sought in that country.

Reports tell us that two policemen are involved because one of them provided a SIM card to one of the accused, and the other sold them a pair of handcuffs. Those handcuffs are believed to be the ones that were reportedly found on the body. Again, police would not confirm this but reports say Cervantes was found handcuffed, with his eyes taped closed, four ribs broken and his head badly beaten in.

But, that is unofficial, and we stress that at news time no one has been charged yet, but we do expect an arraignment tomorrow in Orange Walk town - and we'll have the full story again tomorrow night.
