Woman Busted With Weed In Sneakers At Prison
posted (July 7, 2014)
Tonight, we report on 3 separate drug busts which ended up in court. The first happened at the Belize Central Prison, where a 25 year-old mother tried to smuggle weed in.

It happened in on last week Friday; Natasha Lewis went to the prison to drop off a package which contained a pair of tennis shoes. She said that it was for an inmate, but the sneakers had an odor, and we don't mean athlete's foot! They smelled high of weed, and when the on-duty prison officer searched the shoes, he found 109 grams - or 3.8 ounces - of marijuana hidden under the soles of the shoes.

She was then charged with drug trafficking, to which pleaded not guilty before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer today. She was released on bail of $5,000, and she must return to court on September 1.

On that very same Friday, police officers visited a 2 storey house on Antelope Street Extension. When they searched it it they found 1.5 grams and a separate 1.2 grams of crack cocaine in one of the rooms. The police reported that they also found almost $10,000 dollars in US currency. Present at the time of the search were Salvadorans, 56 year old Abdulio Torres, 43 year old Noe Martinez and 34 year old Myra Lopez, 14 year-old boy, and a 12 year-old girl.

They were all charged with drug trafficking, and at their arraignment in court today, Torres, wanted to take responsibility for the drugs. After hearing his explanation, Magistrate Dale Cayetano entered him into a plea of not guilty, and granted them bail of $5,000. They all must return to court on September 3.

Finally, on Friday once again, Police had a checkpoint in operation at mile 16 on the Western Highway. The officers noticed that a cream coloured Toyota Corolla car tried to avoid the checkpoint by turning around. Before it could get away, the officers intercepted it on the property of Everyday Super Market. In the car's trunk, the officers found 32.47 kilos - or 71.6 pounds - of marijuana.

Brothers 24 year-old Giovanni and 26 year-old Ellis Requena, were in the vehicle, and they were both charged with drug trafficking. They pleaded not guilty when they were arraigned today before Senior Magistrate Frazer. They were granted bail of $15,000, and their case was adjourned until August 28.
