posted (July 18, 2014)
The headline story of our newscast last night was about a murder in Belize City, and tonight we unfortunately must report on the killing of another city resident which happened less than 24 hours later. He's 27 year-old Oscar Lambey, an avid church-goer, and preacher in training.

His body was discovered near the compound of the Ephesus Seven-day Adventist Church this morning, just before 7. Police believe that he was stabbed and killed in the early hours of the day, and that robbery may have been the motive:

Insp. Santiago Ciau - OC, CIB, Precinct 3
"Police visited the Ephesus Seven Day Adventists Church and Primary School compound situated on Wilson Street, Belize City. Upon arrival there police saw the lifeless body of a fair-skinned, Creole, male person lying face up on the ground about ten feet behind the school. This person was dressed in a red long sleeve shirt and a long, blue dress pants with a pair of dark socks. The person had one apparent stab wound to the upper left side of the chest and three stab wounds to the upper left side of the back. He was identified to be Oscar John Lambey, twenty-eight-years-old. Date of birth 17th June 1986, Belizean unemployed of #2930 Street Belize City. Police investigation so far reveal that Mr. Curtis Richards, the watchman for the said compound for the Seven Day Adventists Church and Primary School was doing his routine compound check at 6:35am. In that he came across the body if Oscar John Lambey. He immediately informed some persons in the immediate area who then called the police to the scene."

"From the persons in the area, he was seen alive by them about a week ago. I can tell from my perspective, I saw him on Wednesday right by the foot of the Swing Bridge preaching and our investigation has also revealed that he is a member of that Seven Day Adventists Church and he would attend services on Saturdays."

Daniel Ortiz
"Can you tell us why he was at that location? Was he there for any particular reason?"

Insp. Santiago Ciau - OC, CIB, Precinct 3
"Information that we have is that sometime last night, I would say about midnight, since he knew Mr. Curtis Richards, he went there to visit him and he and Mr. Curtis and a female were having a conversation at the gate and thereafter he left in the direction of the lights of the Cinderella Plaza area."

Reporter

As you heard the investigating officer explain, Lambey could often be found in Downtown Belize City ministering to passers-by. He was well known to participate in Church activities, and that's what his aunt wants him to be remembered by. She spoke with us at the morgue this afternoon, about the last time she saw him alive:

Bernadette Locaro - Aunt of Deceased
"I saw my nephew the day before which is Wednesday morning. He went at my house to take a bath and when he finish he told me that he was going to the mayor right now because he need to see the mayor to get a paper to continue preach because he loves his bible - he is a Christian. He goes to any other church, but he mostly goes to Central Christian Church."

Geovannie Brackett, reporter
"He is the young man that is always ministering and has his bible, but he is definitely no gang member or anything like that?"

Bernadette Locaro - Aunt of Deceased
"No, he doesn't deal with that, not even drugs or anything."

Geovannie Brackett, reporter
"Why would anybody want to harm this young man?"

Bernadette Locaro - Aunt of Deceased
"I just don't know. I would want the criminal tell me why he killed him because he doesn't bother anyone."

Geovannie Brackett, reporter
"Is he usually out that late in the night and in that area?"

Bernadette Locaro - Aunt of Deceased
"I don't know because we don't know what he does behind our backs, but I know that he is a Christian and he goes to church. Any church activities, he will be there."

Geovannie Brackett, reporter
"How is the family handling this?"

Bernadette Locaro - Aunt of Deceased
"It is hard because we didn't expect that because he is not a trouble person. He doesn't bothers anyone. Even if he is hungry he would sit right there and not bother you."

Police say that they have one man detained, who they believe can assist them in the investigation of Lambey's stabbing death.
