Police Get Big Gun Off The Street
posted (July 18, 2014)
While police continue to investigate Lambey's murder, and all the others that have been happening in the City, they've also increased their patrols and other operations.

On one such intelligence-led operation, police ended up making an important weapons bust. That firearm is a military-grade weapon which used to be part of the arsenal of the Guatemalan armed forces.

Today, the officer who led the operation told us more about that gun they took off the streets:

ASP Calbert Flowers - Deputy OC, Police Precinct 2
"As a result of the recent violence in Belize City, particularly in the south side, the Precinct two police officers have stepped up their operations and patrol. As a result of the operation, about three o'clock this afternoon, a search was conducted on an abandoned lot, an open lot, in the Faber's Road area where this Galil, a five point six-two assault military type rifle was discovered hidden in bushes. We know that these weapons are produced in Israel, their origin is Israel and they were used a lot in the Guatemalan army up to 2008 when they were stopped used by the military in Guatemala. We believe that this weapon belonged to some of these gang members in the south Side of Belize City."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir does it concerns you the caliber of weapon that these gang members have at their disposal, the military grade?"

ASP Calbert Flowers - Deputy OC, Police Precinct 2
"Certainly it concerns us. We know prior, we have intel that these gangs are operating with these weapons. We know that they have these weapons out there and based on our intelligence, we continue to go at them to try to recover some of these weapons."

A quick correction to ASP Flowers' comments, he said that the weapon 5.62 caliber rifle it's actually a 5.56 caliber. These guns were manufactured in Israel.

At this time, police don't believe that this weapon, which they found, has been used in any recent crimes, but they will continue to look into its origin.
