Teenager murdered in OW after club brawl
posted (August 4, 2014)
At the top of the newscast, we told you about how a 16 year-old girl was stabbed to death and left in the Cemetery. She was the first of 2 teenagers killed this weekend.

The other one was 18 year-old Roy Bayliss, a resident of Corozal District, who was shot to death early on Sunday morning, 24 hours after police had found Chryslin Gladdden.

While police are trying to figure out the motive for Gladden's murder, they believe that Bayliss was killed because of a fight at a club. Today, our Courtney Weatherburne went north to try to find answers. Here's her report:

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
Garcia's Tacos Place, looks very much untouched by the violence was visited there. But if you looked more closely, there were signs of 18 year-old Roy Bayliss' murder which happened early on Sunday Morning.

This is how it looked shortly after he had been shot. Eyewitnesses told 7News in confidence that Bayliss went to the vendor and bought $4 tacos, which he ate inside. He sat down with his companion on the orange bench, and was socializing when a gunman crept up on them and fired several shots.

"Some time after 6am on yesterday's date, police responded to the Fort Cairns Market area of Orange Walk Town in respect to a shooting. Upon the Police's arrival, a male person was seen lying on the ground with what appeared to be gunshot injuries to the right side of the jaw. The person was then picked up and taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where he died shortly thereafter. His name was learned to be Roy Bayliss, eighteen years, Belizean Labourer of Third Street North Corozal Town. Initial Police investigations revealed that the deceased along with another friend was in the area of Fort Cairns Market. A male person came up to him who fired several shots at him and thereafter walked off, got on a bicycle and rode away. So far the police have some 15 persons detained pending investigation and we are looking at several angles and are following several leads at this time."

At this time, investigators are trying to piece together how his last moments ended in murder. The preliminary investigation suggests that he was at the Hi 5 Club in Orange Walk, where some sort of confrontation happened. The belief is that this led to his demise a few hours later.

"We have also received that same information and we are following up on that part of the information. As we speak officers are out there following up on that."

Police will continue their investigation, but at this time, the Bayliss family is trying to come to terms with the fact that his life was suddenly cut short. Today, they spoke with our colleagues from CTV3 and discussed how he ended up from Corozal to Orange Walk for a night out:

Mother of: Roy Bayliss
"I spoke to with my son on the 3rd, Saturday night. He called me from Orange Walk stating that he had reach. Before he left he said mom as I reach there I will give you a call. He called me and told me I am here, I told him Roy, just take care, don't get into any trouble, remember you are not at home. He said don't worry mom, I just come to have some fun. It was his birthday on the Friday and he asks me, I normally don't send my son on his own. Normally he would go with his brother, but my other son was working and he came and asks me permission to go."

As you heard in the interview, he celebrated his 18 birthday on last week Friday. His mother said that the plan was for Roy Bayliss to the Fiesta Rama Business Expo. She says that she hadn't given him permission to go to any club or bar.
