Community Cops Care
posted (October 10, 2014)
For the past couple weeks we have been reporting on myriad complaints of police brutality. But this news item sheds a different light on the police department. The Community Policing Unit has made a 6,000 dollar donation to the Special Olympic Committee to assist with upcoming events to be held abroad. Member of the Board of Directors, Alan Auil comments on the impact this donation will have on the sporting activities of the committee.

Sgt. Elroy Carcamo, Head of Community Policing - E.D.
"If you notice over the past two years the police department along with other law enforcement agencies have been teaming up to assist our special needs youths who are participating in sports and are expected to participate in the Special Olympics nationals in Los Angeles, California in 2015. What we are trying to is that we are trying to fundraise in order to get these youths to that location. We know that it is costly, but we also work closely with special Olympic Belize to ensure that we can sell the program and work to see that we get the funding for them. This also marks the beginning of fundraising events for this year, so that we are expecting to start fundraising again until December where we will have the national games for Belize in Belmopan where the torch will be taken. I know that from Belize to Belmopan is a short work, so our team will come up with a route, maybe we take the torch down to Corozal or start from Corozal and bring it down to Belmopan this year."

Alan Auil, Board Director - Special Olympics Committee
"Our main goal in this organization is to provide sporting opportunities. Sporting opportunities really leads to a whole lot more. It helps our children who have disabilities to become more fit, it gives them more confidence, it brings them closer to the community, gives them confidence. So there is a lot of extra benefits and the way we achieve all of it is by proving sporting opportunities for them and that is really what the money is going to be used for. We are part of a world global network and Special Olympics does assist us by providing training; training for our coaches in dealing with persons who have special needs and disabilities. They've also sent doctors, actually as recently I believe 3 weeks ago we got a team here from Arizona. We have a partnership arrangement with Special Olympics Arizona and they brought in a team of coaches and doctors to help to train local personnel in working with Belizean children who have disabilities."

The Special Olympic Committee is planning to participate in an upcoming sporting event in Los Angeles. This group has been representing Belize in Special Olympic World Games since 1991.
