Sand Hill School Loses To Burglars
posted (December 29, 2014)
Over the long Christmas Holiday weekend, thieves broke into the Guadalupe RC Primary School in Sand Hill village and stole a gas tank, as well as copper wiring from the cafeteria. If you're thinking that they did not get away with much, the principal of the school will not agree with you.

Today, when she spoke with us, and explained that the school feeds the children using that tank:

Esther Requena, Principal - Guadalupe RC Primary School
"I was on my way to Belize City and I stopped in to get a file. Actually, I was on my way down because I wanted to pay Bowen and Bowen some monies and when I drove in I saw this window over here and something didn't seem right with it. But we had a previous burglary and it was damaged, so I didn't pay it much attention. But on my out Ms. Vacarro over there showed me, she said look at the back and when I stop and I went to the back another window was pry open - a board window was open and I said oh boy. I came out the vehicle and I took a walk just to notice that the cafeteria was broken into also."

Daniel Ortiz
"What all have you determine has been stolen since your survey of the area?"

Esther Requena
"Well offhand, from what I've seen, I've been in the cafeteria, a brand new gas tank which was donated to us last year through First Caribbean Bank and it was full; a blender; and some pots and the slow cooker. Those are only from the cafeteria that we've notice missing. From this classroom I think only about a fan that I have seen from in there and in the cafeteria, all the wiring has gone. Every piece of wire has been cut. Even the wire that connects the gas tank o the stove missing as well."

Daniel Ortiz
"Ma'am, are you able to tell us more or less what you think the value of the items you've lost and how much it will cost to replace it?"

Esther Requena
"The value, its a bit difficult for me to say the exact value because we cannot put an exact value to these things because we don't benefit from it. Who benefits from these things are the children. So when we have things like these, yes it affects us, but who it affects most are the children because we use these things to prepare food for them, so in actually, they are not stealing from the teachers, from the school - they are stealing from their own children."

The principal told us that they've been burglarized more than two times in the past.
