When we left you last night, it was with the news that a fisherman had been murdered in his boat near the Belcan Bridge in Belize City. Well, tonight, we can confirm that the deceased is 29 year-old Pedro Aldana Ayuso Jr., a resident of Oleander Street.

Turns out that it was kind of a drive by on the sea, where the gunman came up in another boat. Today, we spoke to his family and police about the circumstances of this unusual murder. Monica Bodden reports::….

The body of 29 year old Pedro Ayuso jr lay dead inside this floating skiff – near the Belcan Bridge in Belize City. Police responded to the shooting just after 7 last night.

We learned that Ayuso who is a fisherman of Orleander Street – had just dropped off a friend at Conch Shell Bay and was returning home – when another skiff approached his boat from behind and fired two shots at him. Both shots caught Ayuso in the abdomen – and he died minutes later in his vessel. The killer's boat then sped off in the direction of the Bel China Bridge.

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Belize City

"Sir do you have a motive behind this murder?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero

"Well we have not established a motive at this time. This shooting incident happened in the river and he was in a vessel. The only information we have is that another vessel was heard speeding off after the shooting."

Duane Moody

"Sir, is this man, is Mr. Ayuso known to the police for bending the law or anything like that?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero

"No, he is not known to the police. We are doing our investigation at this time and following up on some leads that we have."

Pedro Ayuso Sr was with family members last night when he received the tragic news about his son.

Pedro Ayuso Sr. - Father of the Deceased

"You have my mind and heart open that in life you have to expect anything. So it wasn't a real extra big shock but when I got the news, yes, the heart gets down, the body starts to feel weak. He's my only son, I could call and say the boat goes down; He come help me haul it up, so it's not easy."

Pedro Ayuso Sr.

"I only go by what I hear from people. They say he went to drop the owner of the boat by conch shell bay and the owner of the boat said that, just shove off and Pete come back. By the time he get by Belcan bridge that is where people said another boat came from behind very close and start to fire shots. So he got 2 shot in his abdomen, they said his right side and since it's only him in the boat, nobody was in there to handle the boat. So the boat is spinning around and until they get to the boat, he was partly dead. So when they took him to the hospital he was already dead."

Ayuso was the father of 3 children and one on the way. In May of 2013 he and 2 others were charged with drug trafficking after police intercepted a vehicle which contained over 50 pounds of marijuana.

Pedro Ayuso Sr.

"I never see him in fights, never hear he goes to thief. I know that yes, he likes his little weed and most of him friends when they come hail him get together and smoke their weed but otherwise from fight, quarrel and what's not, never heard a complaint to me."

Police have made no arrests.
