The Western Highway between Belmopan and Santa Elena Cayo is a quite ragged stretch of road - but now 65 million dollars will be spent to upgrade it. The Financing comes from the IDB which is providing 27 million US dollars - while the European Union is chipping in with 5 million Euros and Government puts in 1.5 million US dollars.
Now if 65 million dollars sounds like a lot for 19.4 miles of road - well it includes the installation of a new Roaring Creek Bridge with a higher and wider bridge. The current one is flood prone and can barley hold two lanes of traffic.
The project emphasizes a reduction in road fatalities, and a decrease transport times.
