Summer Camp About Financial Literacy
posted (July 15, 2015)

During the summer break, most students would sign up for sports camps, dance classes or swimming classes – something to keep their minds and bodies engaged during the long vacation. But for others, the summer is all about securing their future. The financial literacy summer camp and showcase was held today at ACC and over 240 students participated. Today the students told us what they learnt about money and budgeting and why it's so important to learn now.

Alester Perez - ACC Summer Camp

"We learn about mentor and business. We did arts and crafts, we learned how to create our own business and teach us more into it."

Shenese White - ACC Summer Camp

"How to save money, how to use it wisely when you grow up because when you don't have a job you can use that same saving to help you get a job."

Courtney Weatherburne

"Do you have a mini saving account right now?"

Shenese White - ACC Summer Camp

"No, but I want to."

Tahj Cattouse - ACC Summer Camp

I learned how to sing in a group and have fun. Learn how to do a budget."

Courtney Weatherburne

"Did you know how to do a budget before or is this the first time that you've been introduced to saving and drafting up a budget?"

Tahj Cattouse - ACC Summer Camp

"Yes ma'am, first time."

Andrea Fishman - PWC Member

PWC is happy to be a participant in project Belize. It's an event we do with peace works where we support financial literacy and the schools here in Belize and we've been doing it for the past 8 years. I think financial literacy is really the foundation for growth for a lot of these kids. Giving them the opportunity to learn more about the foundations of finance, savings. And helping them learn more about what those opportunities are and how saving now can help them for their future."

Courtney Weatherburne

"Those are all technical topics, how are you guys approaching it with a more child friendly perspective?"

Andrea Fishman - PWC Member

"That's a great question. It's obviously very important to be child friendly, to get them engaged. Now as you can see we've been doing games, we've been playing sports, we've been using art and music to help make a little more digestible and fun for them - so it's not just a textbook."

Maianda Griffith - Been in Business since 12

"Well it all starts with the financially trusted camp, they teach us all about budgeting, marketing, production, how to come up with your business plan and from there you branch off. And for our christmas gift a few years later I got a beads set, which eventually became the business I have now."

Courtney Weatherburne

"Tell us about the business, the nature of the business and how it's going for you so for?"

Maianda Griffith

"Well surprisingly it's been going good. The nature of the business it's generally earring making, it's accessories by them. So it's accessories on a whole. So for your house we're working on that but for now it's accessories for you. Earrings as this one I'm wearing, necklaces and bracelets. We're even working on eye glass holders."

Over 800 primary and secondary students in the city are participating in this summer camp. The summer camp concludes next week.
