A month ago, the Solid Waste Management Authority officially opened the San Pedro Transfer Station, which the island's version of the streamlined and upgraded dumpsites in Belize City, Cayo, Belmopan. It's all part of the Solid Waste Management Project to transform the way the country manages its garbage.

The San Pedro Transfer Station was officially inaugurated on July 3, and it now forms a part of the garbage transfer process. When the sanitation workers on the island go and pick up garbage from residents, they will deposit it at the transfer station. From there, it will be brought in to the mainland by barges, and then that garbage will be transferred to the mile 24 Regional Sanitary Landfill.

From August 2013, when it was first opened, to May 2015, the facility has been used to dispose of 50 thousand metric tonnes of solid waste transferred from Belize City and the San Ignacio/Santa Elena/Benque Transfer Station. On a daily basis they receive around 74 tonnes of garbage.

All the garbage coming from these two transfer stations, as well as those planned for Caye Caulker, Burrell Boom and Hattieville, and Belmopan, as well as the newly opened San Pedro Facility, will all find their way to Mile 24 Regional Sanitary Landfill.
