City Shooting In Gang Hotspot
posted (August 5, 2015)

While police from Corozal try to solve the murder of Samir Vivas, investigators from Belize City must try to find the shooters who tried to kill 2 young men in the Jane Usher Boulevard Area this morning before 11 o'clock. The victims are 22 year-old Raheem Arnold of Curl Thompson Street, and 17 year-old Shemar Moore, who lives in the neighborhood. They are hospitalized at the KHMH, and at this time, police aren't saying why they believe that these youths were targeted.

The officer commanding Eastern Divisions Criminal Investigations briefed the media about what they know at this time:

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"This morning we had a shooting on Jane Usher Boulevard where two persons were shot. Shemar Moore was shot to the right arm, left armpit, left foot and to the left upper leg. We have Raheem Arnold, he was shot in the left pelvic area. Both persons are at the KHMH in stable condition. We have our investigators out there, we have 2 suspects that we are presently seeking for this shooting."

Daniel Ortiz

"Can you tell us what police believe prompted this shooting?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"Okay, these guys were on the street on Jane Usher Boulevard when they had some argument with some persons in that area. One was shot first then as he was going to his grand mother's house, the other person was shot."

Daniel Ortiz

"Sir are they believed or are they connected to any of the gangs in the Jane Usher area?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"We are still working to establish that. We know that they are from that general Jane Usher Boulevard area."

Daniel Ortiz

"Is the shooting believed to be gang related?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"Again, we're investigating that we need to establish what the motive is for this shooting."

Reporter

"Sir are the victims and the assailants friends or acquaintances?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"We don't know at this time. Like I said they're at the hospital receiving treatment. Thereafter we will continue the investigation and establish certain things."

Reporter

"Are you able to say how many expended shells were recovered?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"There were 3 expended shells."

Daniel Ortiz

"Is it believed to be one shooter or more than one persons who fired?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"We believe it's more than one person."

Reporter

"Would you say the shootings are connected, related?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero - OC, CIB Eastern Division

"Yes, we believe they are the same persons that did the shooting."

So, how did it happen? Well, there were residents in the area who were nearby when the shooting happened, and 2 of the first responders spoke with Monica Bodden this evening, and they described what they saw. They said that Raheem Arnold was shot first, and within a few minutes, Shemar Moore was gunned down, presumably by the same shooters:

Voice of - Neighbor

"This morning before the gun shot happened, I mi the talk to footy, I gone by footy they house, footy was outside fixing his bicycle."

Monica Bodden

"Footy is who?"

Voice of - Neighbor

"Raheem."

Monica Bodden

"Arnold right?"

Voice of - Neighbor

"Yes ma'am. And I gone borrow his phone and he tell me right now just make he finish fix the bike. I gone inside for the phone and said alright then. Meanwhile I gone to back, and I gone to my brother in law and my sister. We were in the house the play, then we hear thunder and after the thunder, we laugh up and when we done we hear, bang, bang, bang, bang. When we hear bang, bang, bang, we run through the door and we open the back gate. When we open the back gate, lot of people are on the street and they holler footy get shot. When they holler that footy get shot the gun man run out of the yard where me was, with no mask on his face with the gun, a 38 in his hand and run down the street and footy is in the bush in the swamp. Me and my brother in law and the 2nd victim that got shot, named Shemar Moore, me and he take footy out of the bush, pull out him, back him towards the gate where peanuts can carry him to hospital. While peanuts carry him to the hospital, the 2nd victim, he ride up a little bit more from where footy get shot and they shot up he in his hand, his foot and underneath his arm, his hands broke up and his legs broke up."

Monica Bodden

"So that's Shemar?"

Voice of - Neighbor

"Yes ma'am."

Monica Bodden

"So Shemar was assisting Raheem and then shortly after he rode off, that was when he was shot up?"

Voice of - Neighbor

"Yes ma'am."

Monica Bodden

"So that just happen in a matter of seconds?"

Voice of - Neighbor

"Yes ma'am."

Voice of - Neighbor #2

"I was the one who call the police but when I call the firs time a female answered me and I the give them the direction and everything but like they take long to come. I tell them a booth is back here but the booth no open, no police, no foot patrol, no bicylce patrol, no mobile patrol or nothing was in the area. As I done hang up the phone, after I done talk to the female, as I hang up 2 minutes, 3 minutes after that another set of gun shots. So I run down the street where the first shooting happen and when I look I see a little boy on the street stretch out by a bicycle. And when I gone up close I notice he had so much shot on him, I think it's 4 gunshots. So I get on the phone again and I call again for the police and this time is a man that answer me and the man the ask me the same question that the female asked me. Where part and where it the happen, if I could give directions but I give them the same directions and nothings. You no see no police until about half and hour long after that then you see a mobile come with a corporal and a driver and another police in the back seat."

The families declined comment today.
